I was part of the Mpox scientific conference organized by World Health Organization a few days ago. ill do a detailed post on it soon. but for now the most significant takeaway message is summarized below in the picture: Why can't we do things differently this time? Technology and AI are rapidly transforming almost every sector we know, but the sad reality is that I didn't hear a single mention of AI being part of the pandemic response for the Mpox outbreak in Africa. I understand your criticism—Africa is a resource-poor region. However, we have clearly demonstrated that AI can be utilized in resource-limited settings more effectively than ever before. Why can't we allocate just 10% of our time, money, and resources to this new area and seize the opportunity to assess the impact it can bring? Regardless, my team and I will continue to advocate for AI adoption in the Mpox response, and history will be the judge of our efforts. 😉 Mei-Ling Lu | Salomi Arasaratnam | Dr Sithira A. #hehealth #mpoxai #mpoxaiapp

🌟 Last week in Nyeri, Kenya, I had the great opportunity to pass by the Data Science Africa(DSA) 2024 workshop and sit in on Dr. Rose Nakasi, PhD’s session on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. In her thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Nakasi delved into the hopes, hype, promises, and perils of integrating AI into healthcare settings, particularly highlighting its relevance for the African context. The intersection of AI and healthcare holds immense promise for addressing unique challenges in the African healthcare landscape. Dr. Nakasi shared a few ways AI is transforming healthcare in Africa: 🔍 AI Monitoring Social Media: In regions like Uganda, leveraging AI to track conversations on social media platforms offers invaluable insights into public health trends and concerns, such as mental health, enabling proactive interventions and resource allocation. 📊 Personalized Treatment: Tailoring treatment plans based on individual patient data is helpful in addressing the diverse healthcare needs across Africa's diverse demographics and regions, ultimately improving health outcomes. 💊 Chronic Disease Management: With the rising burden of chronic diseases in Africa, AI-driven self-management tools empower individuals to monitor their health and adhere to treatment plans, reducing strain on already stretched healthcare systems. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with Dr. Bamba Gaye and my new brilliant Kenyan friends, Antony M. Gitau and Victoria Sitati, who did an excellent job coordinating the workshop. We had a great time discussing possible collaborative efforts to bridge data science, technology, and AI to improve health outcomes and overall well-being. #DataScienceAfrica2024💡

Data is touted as the new oil, but are we in Kenya truly extracting maximum value from the medical data we collect? Too often, precious data gathered through rigorous research gets shelved and underutilized. What if we could repurpose this "goldmine" to revolutionize our healthcare system for predictive and preventive care? In our new episode, James Kariuki Ngumo from Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) reveals how simply asking the right critical questions can unlock immense potential - if only we appreciate data's value.
