Earlier this month, I chaired the latest meeting of DOJ's Violent Crime Reduction Committee. We heard from our US Attorneys, the Criminal Division, and DOJ law enforcement agencies about successful efforts to combat the annual summer surge in violence. And we heard from the Office of Justice Programs, the Office on Violence Against Women, and the COPS Office about their work to support local communities and law enforcement with lifesaving grants and technical assistance. All this work is making a real difference, with the impact measured in lives saved. Check out the graph linked below: across the nation, murder is down ~17% in 2024--and that's on top of hefty reductions in 2023. But we can't let up or rest on our laurels. We need to keep attacking the drivers of violent crime, through approaches like DAG Monaco's plan to address Machinegun Conversion Devices--small pieces of plastic or metal that convert regular firearms into weapons of war and turn street corners into combat zones. Working with law enforcement, community, and industry partners, we can continue to drive violent crime down while fostering trust in the communities we serve.

Our justice system is held up in the name of public safety, but doesn’t deliver on that promise. If it did, we’d be the safest country in the world.
