The first quarter of 2024-25 saw the largest supermarket player grow its sales. This positive result was more than offset by a combination of regulatory and political factors, higher operating costs and growing competition from Amazon. Jamie Nemtsas

Walmart beat earnings expectations today: “Walmart (WMT) reported another solid quarter as its business proved resilient against discerning consumers and sticky inflation. In Q2, revenue grew 4.8% to $169.34 billion, compared to the $168.46 billion expected. Adjusted earnings also beat estimates at $0.67 per share, a 9.8% year-over-year increase.” Walmart leaders are doing the right thing. They are using their buying power to negotiate lower prices on behalf of their consumers and suppliers are cooperating in some respects. Walmart leadership did not wait for the government to intervene. The Harris campaign has floated the idea of a federal ban on food price gouging. The federal government being involved in free market pricing is a slippery slope. In regards to suppliers stubbornly refusing to lower prices on dry goods, processed foods and carbonated beverages, I would recommend that Walmart and other retailers slowly stop stocking items. Most of the items are bad for people’s health and waist lines anyways. Kudos to Walmart! I plan to shop there more often. #walmart #consumers #inflation #prices #leadershipmatters #cnbc #congress #senate #buyingpower #federalgovernment #business #freemarket #wallstreet #profits #health #politics #weightloss #target
Prices of many groceries and other items have fallen at Walmart, according to CEO Doug McMillon. Yet the leader of the nation’s largest retailer said Thursday that inflation “has been more stubborn” in one particular part of the store: The aisles that carry dry groceries and processed foods. Those include items like carbonated soft drinks. On a call after the discounter posted second-quarter earnings, he said Walmart has pressured suppliers that stock its shelves to cut prices. But he called on those companies to do more.

Walmart is focused on ensuring it can hit the right mix between pricing and value as higher-income consumers contribute a “larger percentage” of its market gains, executives said Tuesday during the company’s earnings call for Q3 of fiscal year 2025. In categories such as grocery, “price obviously matters and so does quality,” CFO John David Rainey said. As the company continues to attract higher-income consumers, it’s also seeing its share in pickup and delivery for categories such as gluten free products or organic produce rise, he said in response to analyst questions. That speaks to the company’s ability to provide “a great opening price point” as well as to sell high quality products, Rainey said. #retail #pricing #inflation https://lnkd.in/e9K5SmTQ

Reflecting on the current present season: for many purchases, same or next-day delivery is not a necessity. In a pinch for diapers, food or whatever, most can just go to the store. And yet, retailers are scaling this offering rapidly. Why? Not the reason you think. "Few people truly need the service... But companies have found that, once acquired, the taste for speedy delivery makes customers both loyal and willing to spend more money...Customers love fast delivery, and the faster we deliver, the more often customers come back" https://lnkd.in/gH_-Keip

Walmart is crushing it. The stock has outperformed the S&P by 2x YTD, all while battling recession fears. But how? Deals and online order/pickup. Walmart’s CFO said that inflation was flat for Walmart YoY, so growth was driven by selling more units vs. higher prices. They had 7,200 “rollbacks” in the quarter (short term deals) and a 35% increase in the number rollbacks on food. So what’s the learning here? Presumably, Walmart is doing online deals for food, and savvy shoppers are placing online pickup orders to save on grocery costs.

#Amazon Fresh shuts down in Germany 🙅🇩🇪 The online retailer will close its DE Fresh operation on 14 December. The move comes just days after Amazon announced a partnership with local retailer Knuspr, expected to continue fresh grocery deliveries to Prime members. I’ve predicted Amazon to shut down its European Fresh operations since early last year. Could the UK be next? 🇬🇧 Strong competition from discounters Aldi UK, Lidl GB, Morrisons, & Co. makes UK Fresh stores look like graveyards. Amazon Fresh has failed to deliver on growth targets after the pandemic and to address the needs of ultra-price-sensitive shoppers going through a cost-of-living crisis. If Amazon would play its cards right, it would close down its Fresh business in the UK and focus on non-perishable low ASP selection to strengthen its Core Grocery arm. --- Do you think Amazon Fresh has a future in Europe? As the #ACCC labels Australia’s supermarket landscape as an “oligopoly”, #Amazon is emerging as a significant competitor. Now the second-largest online retailer in the country, according to GoldmanSachs, Amazon is working to enhance its logistics network, aiming for same-day delivery in major Australian cities by 2026. Projected gross merchandise volume for Amazon in Australia is expected to grow from A$4.5 billion to A$6.5 billion this year, with the company targeting increased penetration of the grocery market. Online grocery shopping accounts for just 7% of sales in Australia pointing to Amazon’s significant opportunity for market expansion. So, IS finally, the media/analysts is now starting to start subtilely correcting their glamorisation of Quick commerce as the future of grocery retail Is reality finally sinking in with the analysts that Grocery Quick commerce cannot be profitable at scale besides a few high population density Urban locations...? Are analysts finally correcting their mistakes in their over enthusiasm that Grocery quick commerce is NOT A GOLD MINE...! Addition of new categories like Non-apparels, Small Consumer durables, Accessories, Pharma etc will need more capital, expertise and divided attention....further expanding their requirement for additional capital for loss funding + new businesses. Increased competition will put a lot of pressure on profitable locations of their dark stores..... https://lnkd.in/gdjWsc3Q
