Interesting and timely new research from the Skillnet Climate Ready Academy in partnership with Maynooth University and Business in the Community Ireland has shown that while Irish business leaders are increasingly focused on sustainability, they require clarity on the necessary skills and leadership approaches needed. The ‘Sustainability Capabilities for Business Leaders’ report explores leader's sustainability beliefs, values and competencies, and sets out key recommendations and actions. It is very welcome to see the research begin to explore nascent issues among Irish business leaders including planetary limits, discourses of delay, and critical systems thinking. On recommended actions, the need to establish more networks and communities of practice is highlighted, as well as exploring new forms of governance and decision making. The need for business leaders to better engage in scenario planning to understand what inevitable disruptive change will look like for their organisation is also highlighted and to establish a clear vision for what sectors will look like when aligned with ambitious sustainability policy and science.
