FROM OUR CO-CHAIR Pauline Beattie IN RESPONSE TO CIT World ARTICLE: There's so much discussion about sustainability- but has it plateaued? | C&IT World (cit-world.com) "Environmental sustainability is no longer 'a nice to have', because as many of our ABPCO members recognise, there's now an expectation to build sustainable choices into the event planning process. There’s lots of great successes already - as is evidenced in the ABPCO Excellence Awards. Although we're all in a different place on the journey to 100% Sustainability, there are still few that have budget lines in place for carbon reporting and offsetting - so the question of cost/budget is still challenging for many. The wider topic of social sustainability and governance and how we measure it is the next question. The big positive is that many event planners are looking at using events as a force for good and are committed to leaving a positive legacy at the venues/destinations they visit". Here's a link to our VB legacy toolkit – which is a great resource 😊 https://lnkd.in/en8iDpv3 And another one to our sustainability toolkit https://lnkd.in/ewCXH6pM SUSTAINABLE CATEGORY - THE ABPCO EXCELLENCE AWARDS If you're pushing the envelope on all things Sustainable, we want to hear all about it, so why not enter the ABPCO EXCELLENCE Awards? 🌍 Dive into the Latest Insights on Sustainable Subventions in Event Planning 🌿 Discover compelling insights in Holly Patrick's recent article about the growing trend of sustainable subventions provided by cities and CVBs. It's an enlightening read, featuring impactful examples from Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement)cities and a thought-provoking quote from Genevieve Leclerc, CMP, CICE: "Convention bureaux can drive demand for 'sustainable' service providers by encouraging event organizers to adopt more socially and environmentally responsible procurement practices. They can also promote the use of public transportation at large-scale events, encourage innovative circularity models, and steer citizens and visitors towards carbon-neutral activities – ultimately, transforming event funding programs into powerful mechanisms for urban transition." 💡 As the industry shifts towards sustainability, Genevieve Leclerc, CEO of Meet4Impact, introduces the concept of eco conditionality or cross-compliance. This refers to financial assistance being tied to environmental or social compliance, driving a more responsible approach in event planning. ⚡ One exemplary program leading this charge is VisitBritain Business Events’s Growth Programme. By requiring detailed evidence of wider impact and strong environmental policies, they incentivize events like One Young World, the World Congress of Soil Science, and UKREiiF to integrate sustainability into their strategies. For instance, One Young World sponsored local scholarships, the World Congress of Soil Science promoted engagement through art, and UKREiiF achieved ISO20121 accreditation. My vision when setting up the #Eventsustainability #supplychain roundtable in the north east was to bring our key industry suppliers together to start discussions around challenges and opportunities we face when making our events more sustainable. The group focuses on how we can collaborate to make the world of events - starting on our home turf - more sustainable and deliver positive impact through our activities. It takes time to make #change. Yesterday was the third roundtable of the year and I think we are making progress as a group and I thank everyone in the group for getting involved. And thanks also to our hosts for our 2024 meetings Crowne Plaza Newcastle - Stephenson Quarter The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and Newcastle City Council. Yesterday's discussions were around: The new regenerative tourism and events framework - https://lnkd.in/evXRNQ4W Buy Supply north east directory - https://lnkd.in/ev8V3fcH Progress we’ve all made over the past year. BeaconHouse Events has reduced carbon on our annual events on average by 25% (more on this to follow in our sustainability journey report which we’ll publish at the end of 2024) We discussed ideas on how we can drive more change together, as an events industry in the north east: 🌍 An initiative to tackle food waste and give back to the community 📊 A possible ESG events impact tool to help us target change through our activities, from the outset. ⭐️ Involvement in development of toolkits for the new north east regenerative tourism and events framework to help suppliers digest and understand how to deliver change.
