Episode 24: The Appprentice And The Bee Situational Awareness and Output! Are solitary bees efficient pollinators? Absolutely! For example, commercial apple growers benefit from the free pollination services of the Red Mason bee. This species can be 120 times more efficient at pollinating apple blossoms than honeybees. In our Apprentices’ development, understanding efficiency and output is critical. This incredible film clip shows a Red Mason bee cleaning out her nest, even though collected pollen clings to her body. Why? These bees are constantly vigilant about potential predation of their nests. In this case, she might have noticed something unusual in her cell that could threaten her offspring, prompting a thorough clean-out, to start again. Similarly, our Apprentices learn the importance of situational awareness and high standards in their work. If something doesn’t feel or look right, it probably isn’t … therefore time to start again! Stay tuned for more insights from “The Apprentice and The Bee”!

How could 'Inaction' be productive? I bet, it does in this case ! 😄 Traditional lush green lawn treated with weed killers vs the one with natural clovers; flowers also give the bee population a chance to recover. It's a win-win! TENNESSEE SMART YARDS: Keeping Tennessee’s land and water healthy, one yard at a time. We call it a Smart Yard - a yard that is in balance with the local environment for the benefit of both people and our ecosystem. Tennessee Smart Yards is an Extension-led program that guides Tennesseans on practices they can apply in their outdoor spaces to create healthier, more ecologically-sound landscapes and communities. Nine principles of stewardship serve as the foundation for the program and are explored in online modules and practical workshops taught by UT-TSU Extension and water resource professionals. https://tnyards.utk.edu/

It turns out that Lincolnshire is not, in fact, flat. Even the bits that seem flat - the wide, agricultural fields under the big skies of the Fens, with their straight blue drains and bone-shakingly bumpy lanes - are less flat than you might think… The Fens were drained over the course of the 1600s, and with considerable resistance by the locals (if you are interested in a spot of local history, check out James Boyce’s recent book, Imperial Mud). “Draining the Fens” might sound like, well, digging some dykes, putting in a few sluices, and then the water trickling gently away. Again, not so much. The Fens is more like a bowl. In order to keep all that agricultural land and all those homes and businesses dry and safe, fresh water is constantly - 24/7 - pumped. Without this constant (and energy-intensive) pumping, the Fens would be mostly underwater. And further underwater than before it was drained: the rich Fenland soil - once it is dried out, ploughed up and farmed with heavy machinery - becomes depleted and compacted. You may be starting to see why this could cause problems in the long term, given that we are reliant on it for a considerable proportion of the nation’s food, especially potatoes and brassicas. Add to that the ageing farmer population and a pack of challenges in the horticulture sector; chuck in the way that roads are not lasting as long as they were previously expected to; slosh in projected sea level rise… and you can suddenly see why it got us wondering - what is the future of food in the Lincolnshire Fens? Not for the faint-hearted - a group of people from the Fenland food system are meeting throughout 2024, to face head on these and other issues. More importantly, we’ll be asking, what would be robust responses for the long term? The process is supported by moderator Dr Julien Etienne, and yours truly. We don’t have the answers, and we definitely can’t promise that it will be easy. If you would like a glimpse of this process, we would love to hear your thoughts, questions and ideas - join us online, on Wednesday 12th June, 10-11:30. Today, my team and I presented the project we worked on over the past quarter, Meat Your Maker: Optimizing Food Waste, at the Seventh College SYNposium. Aidan Thompson, Vanessa Elizalde, Christopher Chou, and I are all members of the Living Laboratory: Decarbonizing UC San Diego section of the SYN 100: Synthesis 100 course. During those past ten weeks, we utilized class time to target a core component of UC San Diego's carbon emissions: food waste. Our driving question asked, "How does communicating the importance of food waste reduction within Housing and Dining Services (HDH) dining halls translate into mindful student behaviors? How do current HDH policies and practices promote or detract from this message?" From conducting an observational study to researching policy implementations, I am as gratified as I am informed after these ten weeks. I am so appreciative to have been selected for this opportunity and even more so to have been able to work with such an incredible group of people, including my professor: Brenna Gormally, Ph.D.
