Cara's part of a long Whisky Dynasty, so, as someone who's tried the most expensive Scotch, (as she heads-up a firm that actually BOTTLES it), you'd expect her 'Desert Island Drams' to be hyper-exclusive. No so. There's lots of 'supermarket' Scotch on her list and definitely proof that if you actually like DRINKING good Scotch Whisky, it's not that expensive. For instance, I topped up my own personal Decanter yesterday, with a really nice Blended Malt, that costs well under £20. Supermarket stuff. It's still nice. Drink it long this Summer, with ice and Soda, as a perfect (and less calorific) alternative to a Cold Beer. Cara shows there's also lots of rather good Scotch, you can drink neat, that you don't need to speak to a Broker about. So, there's Scotch Whisky that costs the same as a Car and there's Scotch Whisky that costs the same as a 'Slab' of beer. Both good, both filling a gap. Do you drink whisky? There are many types of whisky, but today I want to talk briefly about Islay Scotch Whisky. Islay is an area in Scotland known for its peated and smokey whiskies. But what is peat and how does it affect the whisky? Peat is the top layer of soil often found in Boggs and other wetland areas. This layer of soil is cut and dried and can then be used as a fuel agent. In Islay, they use the peat to dry the soaked grain before it is distilled. So if you think about how the apple wood affects the meat in your smoker, the same for the peat. Interesting Facts about Irish Whiskey: 1. Oldest Licensed Distillery:The Old Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland is the oldest licensed distillery in the world, established in 1608. 2. Triple Distillation: Unlike other whiskies, which are often distilled twice, Irish whiskey is typically distilled three times, giving it a smoother finish. 3. Different Style: Irish whiskey is known for its smooth, light flavor with notes of honey, vanilla, and wood. This is partly due to the triple distillation process and the combination of malted and unmalted barley. 4. Types of Irish Whiskey:There are four main types - Single Malt, Single Grain, Single Pot Still, and Blended Irish Whiskey. 5. Revival:Irish whiskey has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last decade, with new distilleries opening and exports increasing significantly. Short History of Irish Whiskey: Irish whiskey has a storied history that dates back to the 12th century, when monks began distilling a spirit they referred to as "uisce beatha," Gaelic for "water of life." The process evolved over time, and by the 18th century, Irish whiskey was renowned globally. In the 19th century, Irish whiskey was the most popular spirit in the world. However, a series of unfortunate events in the 20th century, including Prohibition in the United States, trade wars, and competition from Scottish whisky, led to a dramatic decline. At its lowest point, only a few distilleries remained operational. However, the late 20th and early 21st centuries saw a renaissance in Irish whiskey production. Can Scotch whisky be bottled outside Scotland? 🥃 Now, you may have heard people use the term ‘Scotch’ as a catch-all for spirits like single malt or blended whisky. You may have even heard the people or products of Scotland referred to as ‘Scotch’. And, there’s a reason for that. 1️⃣ For whisky to be called "Scotch," it must be distilled, matured, and bottled in Scotland, as per the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009. 2️⃣ There’s an exception, blended Scotch can be bottled abroad, but single malts must be bottled in Scotland. 3️⃣ These rules uphold Scotch whisky's global reputation for authenticity and quality. To be sold as Scotch, whisky must: - Be distilled in Scotland - Be aged in oak casks for at least three years - Have an alcohol by volume (ABV) of at least 40% - Be made of nothing more than grain, yeast, and water What’s your favorite Scotch? WHISKY GALORE 2 : THE SINGLETON Creating a new single malt from scratch was an interesting challenge. It was the mid-1980s and the only malt in IDV's stable was Knockando. At the time I described malts as "aloof, subdued in their presentation and in taste terms not very accessible to uninitiated drinkers." Our way into the category was to create a single malt for blended whisky drinkers. Why aim for 4% of the market - malt drinkers - when you could target the other 96%? We didn't have a distillery, so we looked for a brand name. We used one from a gin idea we'd tried a decade earlier. It was almost a generic name for a single malt! The packaging, by Gerry Barney, echoed the showier style of Glenfiddich rather than the more remote malts like Lagavulin or Laphroiag. And the accessible whisky itself came from the J&B distillery at Auchroisk. It had a lovely sweet, estery taste which provided the underlying character of J&B Rare. A year after launch, The Singleton won a 'best in Britain' award after it had been blind taste-compared by a panel of experts against all of Scotland's most famous malts. Following a beautiful pack upgrade in the early 2000s, The Singleton is now No. 4 in single malts worldwide. And its name enables it to accommodate malts from a variety of distilleries : Auchroisk, Dufftown and Glen Ord. As with many other ideas, the real credit goes to the IDV team led by David Maxwell Scott. They bought the basic idea in a heartbeat and implementation followed quickly afterwards. 🥃 Types of Whisky 🥃 There are three types of Scottish whisky: single malt, single grain, and blended. 🥃 Single malt is made using malted barley. 🥃 Single grain typically uses corn with a bit of malted barley. 🥃 Blended whiskies combine the other two. Blended whiskies frequently bear the names of their founders, such as Johnnie Walker or Bell’s. Monday whisky knowledge - what is single malt whisky? Often considered ‘superior’ among experts, single malt whisky has been made in Scotland since the 18th century. Blended whisky is created from single malt whiskies and grain whiskies taken from different distilleries. A single malt whisky can only be produced from a single distillery. But it can also be made using a single variety of malted grain, typically malted barley. However, single malt whisky need not be the product of one single whisky cask. They are almost always a blend of whiskies taken from several casks.
