Visibly, the decrease of the number of Chinese students studying in the U.S. is here to stay (Q1, Q2, Q3). Q1: "India has overtaken China as the top source for international students in the US for the first time in about 15 years..." Q2: "A total of 331,602 Indians studied in the US during the 2023-24 school year, compared with 277,398 Chinese..." Q3: "Chinese students had been the largest foreign group since the 2009-10 school year, but their numbers have steadily declined from 2019-20 onward. That academic year, there were 372,532 Chinese studying in the US." https://lnkd.in/gnZYV93J

Indian Students Overtake Chinese Students in US Higher Education for the First Time According to the latest annual survey by the Institute of International Education (IIE), sponsored by the US State Department, Indian students have surpassed Chinese students in the US for the first time in over a decade. In the 2023-24 academic year, 331,602 Indian students studied in the US, a 23% increase from the previous year, compared to 277,398 Chinese students, whose numbers dropped by 4%. The shift marks a significant change, as Chinese students had been the largest foreign student group in the US since the 2009-10 academic year. However, their numbers have been on a steady decline since 2019-20, when 372,532 Chinese students were enrolled. Meanwhile, Indian students have seen consistent growth, with the 2023-24 total nearly double that of 2020-21. This change in enrollment patterns aligns with broader geopolitical shifts and U.S. policy. Following restrictions during the Trump administration, which limited travel and immigration, particularly for Chinese graduate students and researchers, Indian students have seen a rise in both interest and acceptance in the US. Additionally, US government officials have indicated a preference for Indian students in STEM fields due to national security concerns. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell recently expressed a desire for more Chinese students in the humanities and social sciences, while advocating for a stronger presence of Indian students in STEM disciplines. The data confirms this trend: around 50% of Chinese students in the US are enrolled in STEM subjects, while nearly 73% of Indian students pursue STEM degrees. As US institutions increasingly value talent from India, this shift in foreign student demographics highlights the changing landscape of global education and US immigration policies. In Canada, the ban on foreign ownership of housing has been extended for two years to address affordability concerns, alongside limits on international student permits and post-graduation work permits. Meanwhile, UK universities are reviewing international student admissions to address controversy over recruitment practices, targeting “bad practice” among agents. The graph shows trends in South Korean student enrollment in higher education institutions in Big Four plus One Anglophone countries. 🖍 From 2004 to 2023, the USA had the highest number of South Korean students, peaking at about 75,000 in 2011. This number then declined significantly, dropping to approximately 40,755 in 2023. South Korea's consistent contribution to American higher education as the third largest source country is well-documented. Canada and Australia show fluctuations but remain relatively stable. Australia peaked in 2011-2012, followed by a decline and stabilization at around 9,309 students in 2023. Canada had a similar peak in 2011, with numbers stabilizing at 11,480 students in 2023. The UK saw a steady decline, leveling off at about 4,974 students in 2023. New Zealand, consistently the lowest, saw a steep decline from around 5,000 students in the mid-2000s to 985 in 2023. 🔗 #InternationalEducation #SouthKoreanStudents #HigherEdTrends #GlobalEducation #StudentMobility #StudyAbroad

I recently came across a very interesting survey report, which found that 57% of Indian students studying abroad have pursued their education from state boards mostly, breaking the myth of CBSE and ICSE being the frontrunners. Another thing that I liked was how many girls are leading the survey, which shows that more and more women are stepping up and aiming for international education. 🙌 #WomenEmpowerment #OverseasEducation #GirlEducation #InternationalStudies
