1 in 11 people faced hunger globally in 2023: State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report Between 713 and 757 million people may have faced hunger in 2023, according to the report. This is an alarming figure and is a warning sign that the world is falling significantly short of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, Zero Hunger, which is six years away from the 2030 deadline. Today October 16 is World Food Day. As the global population grows, hunger persists. Despite sufficient food production, 733 million people worldwide face food insecurity (FAO). This year's theme, "Right to Foods for a Better Life and Future," highlights the urgent need to address hunger and malnutrition. Food is a fundamental human right, essential for survival and well-being. Yet, crises like conflict, climate change, and economic downturns threaten our food systems. We must transform these systems to ensure food security, protect the environment, and create inclusive livelihoods. Today, we honour the countless individuals who are working tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to food. From farmers and food producers to community organisers and volunteers, these #FoodHeroes are making a difference in the lives of millions. On this #WorldFoodDay , let's recognise their dedication and commitment to ending hunger and malnutrition. Their efforts are essential for building a more just and equitable world. Can We Feed the World? 🌽🌍:A Deep Dive into Food Security 01 Imagine a world where every child sleeps with a full stomach, every family has access to nutritious food, and no one worries about where their next meal will come from. This is the vision of a food-secure world.🤩 Unfortunately, the reality is far different. Millions of people around the globe, including Nigeria, face food insecurity, a crisis exacerbated by factors like climate change, poverty, conflict, and economic instability, the challenges are numerous. Yet, the goal of a world without hunger remains a worthy and achievable one. Food security is the state of having reliable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet dietary needs for a healthy life. It encompasses four key dimensions: 🌽Availability: Sufficient quantities of food are available. 🌽Accessibility: People have the economic means to acquire adequate food. 🌽Utilization: Food is used effectively, and nutrients are absorbed. 🌽Stability: Access to food is reliable over time. The journey towards a food-secure world is complex and multifaceted. It requires a collective effort from governments, organizations, and individuals to address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition. Stay tuned for my next post where we will delve deeper into the factors that contribute to food insecurity, such as poverty, conflict, and climate change. By understanding these challenges, we can work together to build a more sustainable and equitable food system. #FoodScience #FoodSecurity #GlobalHunger #EndHunger #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateChange #Nutrition #PublicHealth #Poverty #Conflict #ClimateChangeImpact #FoodWaste #FoodLoss

Can We Feed the World? 🌽🌍The Hidden Faces of Hunger 02 Food security is the state at which food have to be available, accessible, effectively utilized and have stability. These were highlighted in my previous post. Today, we're going to delve deeper into the factors that contribute to food insecurity. Food insecurity is a state of being without reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, nutritious food.🤌🏼 It involves uncertainty about where the next meal will come from or the inability to obtain nutritious food in a socially acceptable way. This is a pressing concern that affects millions of people worldwide. 🌽 Poverty: Poverty is a significant driver of food insecurity, limited financial resources restrict access to nutritious food, forcing individuals and households to rely on cheaper, less healthy options. As the wealthy tend to have better access to food, the poor struggle to make ends meet. 🌽 Conflict and Political Instability: Conflict and political instability can severely disrupt food systems, leading to food shortages, price increases, and reduced access to food. Refugees and internally displaced persons are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity due to their limited access to resources and infrastructure. 🌽 Climate Change: Extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves, can devastate crops and livestock, impacting food production and availability. 🌽 Soil Degradation and Fertility: Soil degradation and fertility decline can reduce crop yields and impact food security. Soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and salinization can all contribute to reduced soil fertility. 🌽Economic Shocks: Economic downturns, job losses, and rising food prices can erode food security, especially for vulnerable populations. Food security is a complex issue, influenced by a multitude of factors. Understanding these factors is essential for developing effective strategies to address food insecurity. By addressing poverty, conflict, climate change, and other factors affecting food security, we can work towards a future where everyone has access to nutritious food. What do you think are the most significant factors contributing to food insecurity in our country? The 2024 FAO Report highlights the alarming reversal in progress toward ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition. As we confront this global challenge, it's clear that significant and equitable financing is essential to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2.1 and 2.2 by 2030. At iDE, we believe in the power of rural entrepreneurs to drive change in nutrition, agriculture, and poverty reduction. By supporting these entrepreneurs with the necessary financial tools and resources, we help communities build sustainable food systems, improve access to nutritious diets, and break the cycle of poverty. 🌱💡 Together, we can turn the tide and make zero hunger a reality. Let's ensure no one is left behind. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eNkA3JRj #FAOReport2024 #ZeroHunger #iDEGlobal #SustainableAgriculture #EndPoverty #RuralEntrepreneurs #GlobalGoals

WFF second day: At this year’s World Food Forum, a key focus is the Hand-in-Hand Initiative, which supports nationally led efforts to transform agrifood systems, addressing poverty, hunger, and inequality through advanced geospatial tools and strategic partnerships. While it aims to raise incomes and strengthen climate resilience, there’s a critical question: Can these transformations truly improve nutrition without integrating direct nutrition interventions, like those in the Essential Nutrition Actions framework? How can we ensure that investments prioritize nutrition-specific interventions and reach those most in need? #FoodSystemsTransformation #SDGs #ENOUGH #EndChildHunger #EndMalnutrition

I have seen many happily eating a soda and bread as a regular meal? It’s cheap, quick and somewhat satisfying. They are #eating but how well does that food support their nutritional needs, and in the long term their #health? #SustainableDevelopmentGoal 2 or #globalgoal2 is the second of the #17SDGs, established by the #UnitedNations in 2015. It aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote #sustainable #agriculture. Officially, about 1 in 10 people go to bed hungry every night, many in #Africa and by some records now #Nigeria which is just so unfortunate. We need to improve access to affordable good food, in order to end all forms of #malnutrition (including stunted physical and mental development) As at today, the world is not on track to achieve zero hunger by 2030. And we need to act fast and intentionally #sdg2 #FitforaPrincessFoundation To learn more please read on
