Play develops a child’s “theory of mind.” Theory of mind” is the ability to walk in another’s shoes. Kids who play lots of “let’s pretend” learn to figure out what their various characters would think about and do. Engaging in pretend games with others requires understanding playmates’ thoughts and feelings. A well-developed theory of mind increases a child’s tolerance and compassion for other people and increases their ability to play and work well with others. Immediately following our slate reveal, our focus turned to our first release, Fear the Spotlight, with our trailer debuting in the Day of the Devs Summer Game Fest show. The game is being developed by Cozy Game Pals, a literal husband-and-wife team comprising the entire studio. The game is a love letter to ‘90s era horror games, with modernized gameplay mechanics, incredible story and sound design, satisfying tactile puzzles, characters you can invest in, and perfectly crafted atmosphere. It has so much heart, while also being dark and creepy and scary *with no jumpscares or gore*. It’s the kind of game you’d enjoy even if you haven’t played horror games before or don’t think you’d like them. Working on this game has been a delight. Bryan and Crista are two of the kindest, most down-to-earth people you could meet, and every new build is like unwrapping a gift. We had the privilege of putting a demo in front of over 140 media and industry members during Play Days at SGF. Even more so than our trailer reveal, the reception from those that played has knocked our socks off: • Kotaku: “Fear The Spotlight is shaping up to be a brilliant melding of old and new, a clear marker of Blumhouse’s excellent taste.” • Good Vibes Gaming: “One of the best games I’ve played here at Play Days hands down.” • Temple of Geek: “For a development team of only two people, this game will surely be in the conversation among greats of the genre when it arrives on all major platforms in late 2024.” • Greg Miller, Kinda Funny: “The exciting answer for me [for Game of the Show] is Fear the Spotlight.” • Easy Allies: “The vibes are immaculate.” “This game is sick.” “It is GOTY material.” Christopher Dring, Head of GamesIndustry.biz, also called it out as one of his favorite games from the show. We couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with Cozy Game Pals and help elevate their spectacular work. I hope you’ll check it out later this year when it releases!
