We are pleased to announce the launch of the latest edition of *Scandinavian-Canadian Studies*, published by the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC). We look forward to collaborating with AASSC at this year’s SASS conference, where we will further explore the shared histories, values, and cultural insights between Scandinavia and Canada. https://lnkd.in/eABWGGW5 Scandinavian-Canadian Studies/Études Scandinaves au Canada is a journal published by the AASSC (Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada/L’Association pour L’Avancement des études Scandinaves au Canada). It expresses in concrete—and more recently virtual—form the Association’s conviction that there is much to be learned from peoples of Scandinavia, not least by Canadians, who share a comparable geopolitical situation, as well as social and cultural histories and values. Here's a paraphrase of Evan Frendo's report on a conference he went to recently. First, he noted that there was hardly anything on BELF (English as a Business Lingua Franca) Lots on ELF in universities schools, but little on its use in business or workplace contexts. Why? The common response was that business environments are "notoriously difficult to access". But, as Evan says, this is nonsense. Actually, he didn't say that, he said "this overlooks the fact that many international corporations have in-house trainers or regularly work with language schools. So the data and opportunities for access are there, the problem is that connections between practitioners and researchers remains frustratingly weak". Evan notes, with his usual restraint, the fact that every member of the 18-member scientific committee and 22 of the 23 keynote speakers were affiliated with a university. Secondly, Evan was "struck by the surprisingly poor quality of some presentations". Unreadable slides, an excessive number of slides for the allotted time, and speakers failing to check the room setup or test the technology in advance were factors. Additionally, "some speakers—all too often those for whom English is a first language—seemed unaware that their accents and speed of delivery could pose challenges for some listeners, which felt particularly ironic at an ELF conference". When Evan commented to younger researchers in universites that these issues represent a persistent problem across many academic events, they responded with a resigned sigh, saying, 'That’s just how it is.' How depressing is that! The third issue Evan noted was "a palpable sense among some participants that much of the ELT industry is overlooking the insights that ELF researchers deem crucial". Let me put that my way: the vast majority of those in the ELT business work within a smug, suffocating bubble - perfectly reflected in ELT conferences. They are, IMO, as bad as the university crowd, just as blinkered, just as stuck in their ways. Evan is a beacon shining bright in the gloom of navel-gazing ELT folk who are still lost in their old ways, further led astray by all the current crap about identity politics. Evan works with inspiring enthusiasm, freshness, business acumen, knowledge and insight towards a new way of helping people learn the English they need. I feel a Dylan song coming on For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin' For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin' https://lnkd.in/dZyTpE8v
