Corporate Open Innovation - What to do and not to do In recent years, we have witnessed the rise of Open Innovation (OI) practice at multiple corporates. So I have summed up my last few years of ground experience in below article recommending what to do and not do as an innovation practitioner. First of all, What is Open Innovation Instead of building innovations/solutions in-house, corporates adopting the best solution available in the market. This will not only save development time and cost but also help you understand the growing technology landscape, move faster, and keep up with your competition. Why now OI is growing among corporates? 1. Improved efficacy of new age technologies like IIoT, Computer Vision, etc. by startups over the past decade 2. Many startups are now flexible to go white label, third party, etc. 3. With the rise of tech startups, Corporates don't have time to evaluate 1000+ innovations to find the best whereas Innovation consulting firms' filling the gap by identifying the best innovation in the market 4. FOMO of new technologies in the market How are companies doing it? Many companies partner with third-party entities, and few corporations do it by themselves. The trend is expected to grow over the years so it's important to learn from the experience. Feel free to read the handbook and give your feedback

//RESEARCH UPDATE: Innovation performance 🚀 As promised, I am posting some deep dives to our conference papers from the Continuous Innovation Network (CINet) Conference this year:-) First is the Paper with the (very academic;-)) title "Effects of boundary spanning between explorative and exploitative units" from a research project with Julien Alain N. (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts) and Dominik K. Kanbach from our Research Group Strategic Entrepreneurship at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management) Luckily, the content is actually much easier to grasp than the title: We are testing how informal connections ("Boundary spanning") between explorative (i.e. innovation) and exploitative (i.e. core business) units influence innovation speed and innovation performance. This is important not only for #ambidexterity theory but also for the design of innovative organisations in practice, as we know well from our projects at venture.idea ! The results show that => boundary-spanning aka informal connections increase both exploitative (new to the firm) and explorative (new to the market) innovation performance! => boundary-spanning is even a necessary condition for high (top quartile) innovation performance BUT: Boundary spanning negatively influences innovation speed, which seems like a downer;-), however: => innovation speed negatively influences innovation performance, meaning: lower speed results in higher innovation performance (more explorative + exploitative innovations implemented) Bottom line: Do not fall in the trap of completely separating your innovation unit from the core business. While more organizational interlinks (formal and informal) will lead to lower speed (yes, more meetings...), they ultimately lead to higher innovation performance (more leveraging of existing "unfair advantages", better traction/adoption...) ! The paper is still preliminary but while we work on a journal-ready version, you can already dive in, download link in comments :-)

We need to get back to the drawing board and help organizations understand the very basics of innovation: definitions, typology, infrastructure, processes, metrics, and incentives. We need to create a set of short narratives, “Innovation101,” so to speak, giving organizations a place to start, in a practical and intuitive way. And we need help from academic researchers studying innovation. No, I’m not calling on them to stop deepening our theoretical understanding of the innovation process. Instead, I’m urging them not to forget that by producing knowledge that the innovation practitioners can’t use, they make their future work less meaningful. #innovation
