Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor.studio: 2024 taught me that true educational liberation happens when critical theory meets community action. From Sussex lecture halls to Narayi streets, every insight gained became a bridge between academic understanding and practical change. The MA in International Education & Development deepened my theoretical grounding while expanding practical impact. Studying Freire while working with children at Narayi Community Learning Centre showed how education can either perpetuate or challenge systemic inequalities. The Spirit of Sussex Award and School Rep recognition affirmed our commitment to amplifying diverse voices in education. Three posts that particularly resonated: "Education must be remade to inspire and enable the oppressed in their struggle for liberation, focusing on consciousness-raising, dialogue, and collaboration between teacher and student." On rethinking power dynamics in education. https://lnkd.in/ehjTh9Sv "Nothing is universally normal. Every community should decide what education means to them." Challenging standardized approaches to learning. https://lnkd.in/esAiEhsM "Local governments hold the aces. School mapping, supervision, curriculum development should be done by local education authorities and village councils." Advocating for community-led reform. https://lnkd.in/ezZQZggw The formal establishment of Tanar Educational Development Foundation marks our commitment to scaling these approaches. At Narayi, we're proving that spaces for creative expression and cultural reflection can build new systems for education liberation. Each child's story, each community's wisdom, shapes our understanding of what education can be. Looking ahead: We're expanding the Narayi model while developing frameworks to help other communities reclaim their educational narratives. The work of liberation through education continues. As Freire reminds us: "Education either functions as an instrument of conformity or becomes the practice of freedom." We choose freedom. P.S. Still seeking a wife to share these educational adventures with! The search continues into 2025... -- Get your 2024 LinkedIn Rewind at https://lnkd.in/eq3kiiR8

Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind: Marking 50 years in education while facing unprecedented challenges has reinforced what matters most: the transformative power of school communities working together. 2024 brought both celebration and challenge. As Labour announced plans for 20% VAT on school fees from January 2025, our community demonstrated remarkable resilience: • Opened our new Food Studio at Senior Boys • Drew 1,500 people to our autumn fireworks celebration • Maintained academic excellence across our diamond model • Enhanced facilities despite planning challenges • Celebrated Christmas with three church services as #ourcampusisMaidenhead Three posts that particularly resonated with our community: "British Independent schools exist throughout the world, not just in the UK and wherever are nurturers of children, centres of excellence." Starting my 50th year teaching https://lnkd.in/daBcbu6H "The PTA is very much about building the community, drawing families in who otherwise would not feel welcome." On our autumn fireworks gathering https://lnkd.in/dH73bpDn "Running a school, indeed anything in Education, Health & Care is so regulated by differing standards to business it's almost impossible to compare." On education's unique challenges https://lnkd.in/duYvRV2i Looking to 2025: While the VAT implementation presents unprecedented challenges, I remain convinced of what 50 years in education has taught me - independent schools contribute far more to society than just great education. We nurture, employ, encourage, and bring hope and opportunity. For children, that means their childhood. For young people, confidence they can strive and have a future. For all, a place they can call their 'safe space' where both rights and responsibilities are learned and respected. Et Omnes Unum Sint - And All Are One.

Thank you to the USES (Undergraduate Student on Entrance Scholarships) Team for highlighting me as the "student spotlight" for their December 2024 newsletter! What a fun interview this was, and I'm so grateful for the launchpad that USES has been for me throughout my SFU journey. This interview did a great job of capturing my journey at SFU as part of USES, but also shed an important light on lessons I've learned as a young Executive Director. For example: the importance of listening/learning from others, knowing when to step aside and trust the "experts," and redefining my idea of who an "expert" really is. Pssst: "experts" are not always the ones with the most letters after their names on their email signatures, but often the people most affected by the issue you're looking to solve.
