🎉 We have exciting news to share! IRC was a collaborating organization and our Executive Director, George D. Gann, CERP, was a contributing author on the recently published UN Decade Standards of Practice for Ecosystem Restoration. The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 recognizes the critical need to protect, conserve and reverse degradation of our world’s native and productive ecosystems and this publication is a momentous step forward for ecosystem recovery. The concept of ecosystem restoration includes ecological restoration as well as other restorative activities such as reduction of societal impacts, improving ecosystem management, and repairing ecosystem functions and services. You can read more about the standards here 👇 . https://lnkd.in/dWUtHfJg

Because today is the day of ecological knowledge, we wanted to open a dialogue about Two-Eyed Seeing, traditional ecological knowledge and the value of humanity working with the land. There is a misconception in western science that humans are separate from nature when we are just as much a part of the earth as the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. With our contributions, the earth thrives! Our duty is to protect the environment by existing in harmony with it. We recommend listening to this video for more information and exploring the concept further! https://lnkd.in/gmQKdHyR

There’s a great opportunity to comment on the proposed draft to change management of the South East Marine Park - this article is well worth a read before submitting feedback
When the South-east Marine Park Network was first established, there was very little known about what lay beneath these isolated and remote waters. Thanks to the dedication of marine scientists and through support from Parks Australia and the various Marine Biodiversity Hubs since the network was established, we’re now better informed and have powerful tools and methodologies to understand and protect these rich and unique marine ecosystems. The Draft Management Plan provides a forward-looking framework for managing the South-east Marine Parks Network from 2025 to 2035 and is open for public input until this Thursday, the 14th November. By taking a few minutes to participate, you’ll help reinforce the importance of sanctuary protections, scientific monitoring, and sustainable management for the South-east Marine Park. We are excited to unveil a new suite of projects from our 2023 Request for Proposals, aimed at integrating Indigenous Knowledge into ocean and coastal decision-making. Historically, the traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples has been overlooked, impeding effective conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems. These projects seek to bridge this gap, focusing on the identification, analysis, and communication of Indigenous Knowledge where culturally appropriate. By fostering innovative engagement approaches, we aim to enhance marine ecosystem management through a collaborative and respectful inclusion of Indigenous traditions and wisdom. https://lnkd.in/g3Amde72

📣 Standards of Practice to Guide Ecosystem Restoration published. As Angela A. says all of us involved in IUCN's Commission on Ecosystem Management are proud of CEM's contribution to this important guide. The Standards are a guidebook for planning and carrying out ecosystem restoration projects no matter the size or scale. They offer recommendations that apply to all stages of the restoration process, from initial planning to long-term monitoring. The recommendations are broad enough to encompass the diversity of restoration activities supported by the UN Decade, and can be used for any type of ecosystem, including urban parks, agricultural lands, cultural sites, wilderness areas, and everything in between. They are flexible enough to be useful for small, community-driven efforts as well as large, well-funded national projects.
Senior Climate Change and Biodiversity Policy Director- CI- Colombia. Chair, Commission on Ecosystem Management, IUCN.
We are very proud in IUCN-CEM to have participated in this alliance with the FAO and the Society for Ecological Restoration SER to produce "The Standards of Practice to Guide Ecosystem Restoration." This Guidelines are the result of an intensive work of this partnership as well as the contributions from the co-authors. The next phase is promoting their use and adoption to ensure that the two years of co-development by literally hundreds of people from nearly 60 countries will yield maximum benefits on the ground You can download the final publication here, launched yesterday. The Spanish and Frensh versions will be released soon. https://lnkd.in/ei6qW5fA

The #ScottCawley-sponsored Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) conference this July 16 will share examples of #GreenFinance initiatives in the UK and Ireland, evaluate nature-related financial mechanisms, and highlight opportunities for ecologists and environmental managers to advise on and access #funding to support nature’s recovery. Significant new funding is required to halt and reverse the decline of nature in the UK and Ireland - public money alone will not be enough. There is an appetite amongst private funders to invest in green initiatives but the rapid development of the green finance market has lead to concerns over corporate #greenwashing along with a confusing array of financial mechanisms. The need to demonstrate a genuine return has prompted a focus on improving methods of measuring, reporting, and verifying the impact of investments. Register below to hear more on successful initiatives to protect and restore #biodiversity and #EcosystemServices. #RestoreNature #GenerationRestoration ISFCOE - International Sustainable Finance Centre of Excellence Thomas Ball Dr Catherine Farrell Jane Stout Yvonne Buckley Mieke Siebers Business For Biodiversity Ireland
