Today's #WildflowerWednesday features the Hairypod Cow-pea! Also known as Vigna luteola, this vining wildflower is native throughout Florida, and is a member of the bean family 🫘. This plant is super important to many of Florida's native butterflies 🦋, as it is a larval host plant for the long-tailed skipper, gray hairstreak, dorantes longtail, and the cassius blue. So, if you are thinking of creating a butterfly garden, keep this wildflower in mind! Although this vining plant is pretty, it can easily overtake other surrounding plants as it twines around them, so keep that in mind too 😉. * * Photo by Liz Dutra * * * #Floridanativeplants #floridanativewildflower #native #plants #plantID #botany #NativesForYourNeighborhood #NFYN #IRC #conservation #habitatrestoration

Sleepingplant or partridge-pea is a slender-stemmed, 1-3 ft. annual that ranges from Massachusetts to Florida. Large, showy, yellow flowers with dots of red at the center arise from leaf axils. A narrow pod follows the flower in fall. This wildflower provides bright summer color, and the flowers attract bees and butterflies. Seed pods are eaten by gamebirds and songbirds, and the plant provides excellent cover for gamebirds and browse for deer. Leaves collapse when touched, giving rise to another common name, sensitive-plant. Like other members of the pea family, partridge-pea requires the presence of microorganisms that inhabit nodules on the root system and produce nitrogen compounds necessary for the plant's survival. Meet the Whitemouth dayflower, or Commelina erecta 🌸 Here are some fun facts about this pretty plant: 🔹Whitemouth dayflower generally blooms in summer and fall, but is known to bloom year-round in South Florida. Blooms attract a variety of pollinators, especially bees. 🔹The seeds are eaten by birds, and the foliage is sometimes consumed by gopher tortoises. It's also edible to humans! The flowers can be eaten raw or candied. Leaves are best cooked (boiled or fried), but the young shoots and tips can be eaten raw. 🔹The common name “whitemouth” refers to the tiny white petal that, because of its placement, gives the appearance of a small white mouth. “Dayflower” refers to the ephemeral nature of the flower — they open in the morning and are closed by early afternoon. We need more street shade in L.A. Why aren’t we planting native trees? https://botany.fyi/lurah7 The highest priority is bringing more resilient shade trees to our urban areas, even if they come from someplace else. #Botany

🌍 The Earth is not flat... So why does this affect the accuracy of your coordinates in IrisBG? The decisions you make about collecting coordinates will determine their accuracy. You will need to answer the following questions: 🍃 In what datum is your database set? 🍃 What basemap will you use? 🍃 How will you collect coordinates? Read our new article, "The Earth is not flat, and why that affects the accuracy of your coordinates in IrisBG" in the IrisBG Knowledge Library under the Mapping topic: https://lnkd.in/enCQ8wzy #IrisBGMapping #BotanicalMapping #PlantMapping #irisbg #botanicaldatabase #plantcollection #botanicalgarden #plantconservation #sharingplantknowledge #plantresearch #botany #botanizing #horticulture #plantrecords #plantcollection #plantdata #gardenrecords #gardendata #gardenresearch #taxonomicresearch #IrisBGBasemap #IrisBGCoordinates #IrisBGDatum

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 ( 𝗫𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘂𝗺 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗺 ) 📸 @nat_in_montrose ( ig ) “ Xerochrysum bracteatum, commonly known as the golden everlasting or strawflower, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae native to Australia. Described by Étienne Pierre Ventenat in 1803, it was known as Helichrysum bracteatum for many years before being transferred to a new genus Xerochrysum in 1990. It is an annual up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall with green or grey leafy foliage. Golden yellow or white flower heads are produced from spring to autumn; their distinctive feature is the papery bracts that resemble petals. A greater variety of colors are found in cultivars. The species is widespread, growing in a variety of habitats across the country, from rainforest margins to deserts and subalpine areas. The golden everlasting serves as food for various larvae of lepidopterans (butterflies and moths), and adult butterflies, hoverflies, native bees, small beetles, and grasshoppers visit the flower heads. “ ~ wiki 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗶 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂! ⍗ www.plantsnap.com ⍗ #goldeneverlasting #strawflower #strawflowers #Xerochrysumbracteatum #pollinatorplant #pollinatorflowers #pollinatorgardens #dailyblooms #plantoftheday #autumnflowers #cutflowers #flowergarden #floweroftheday #botany #botanicalpickmeup #plantsnap
