Aqaba Port Experiences 45% Increase in Ship Arrivals Amidst Regional Maritime Shifts Shipping Arabia, October 1, 2024 — The Port of Aqaba has reported a significant surge in maritime traffic for the first eight months of this year, with ship arrivals increasing by 45% compared to the same period in 2023. This year, the port welcomed 1,700 ships, up from 1,517 last year, according to the Jordan Shipping Association. Dr. Dureid Mahasneh, Chairman of the Jordan Shipping Association, highlighted the dramatic rise in passenger ships which accounted for a substantial portion of the increase. "From January to August, we saw 826 passenger ships dock at Aqaba, up from 570 during the same period in 2023," he stated. This spike in passenger traffic contributed to an overall increase in passenger numbers, reaching 183,805, marking a 22.1% rise from the previous year. The port also saw significant growth in general cargo throughput, with imported goods totaling 1.65 million tons, up 19.6% from 1.38 million tons last year. Notably, iron shipments rose by 57%, reaching 332,000 tons, and calf imports more than doubled to 106,000 heads, although sheep imports saw a decrease. Phosphate exports from Jordan also showed growth, increasing to 4.4 million tons, up from 4.2 million tons, a rise of 4.5%. Truck traffic through the port mirrored this upward trend, with entries and exits both showing increases over the previous year. Despite these positive developments, Mahasneh noted challenges such as the geopolitical tensions affecting the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which have impacted the flow of maritime traffic and shifted shipping patterns in the region. "While the Suez Canal saw a decline in ship traffic by 51.5%, the Cape of Good Hope experienced a significant increase of 72.2% in ship traffic," he explained. The interest from global shipping lines in Aqaba Port remains high, with several new lines initiating operations and establishing local offices in 2024. "This underlines Aqaba's growing significance as a crucial maritime hub in the region," Mahasneh concluded. Source: Al Ghad News #Aqaba #Maritime #Jordan #Shipping #Ports
