Yesterday, I experienced a small but powerful reminder of the importance of thoughtfulness. I had a visit at the Turpin Accounting Services headquarters from Rebecca Messenger and Alexander Steadman from Prestige Recruitment Specialists who dropped in their infamous Christmas cracker 😬 A gesture that was unexpected but deeply appreciated. It got me thinking about how much this simple act of kindness parallels what we aim to achieve in business every day. In business, much like in life, it’s the thoughtful actions that leave a lasting impression: ⭐️Listening to a client’s unspoken needs and delivering above expectations ⭐️Celebrating small wins with your team to show appreciation ⭐️Offering value without expecting anything in return The present I received wasn’t about the object itself , it was about the recognition and the relationship behind it. As leaders, teammates, or service providers, this is the kind of impact we should strive to create. The power of accountability... A public promise made and forget Patrick Hodgdon ☘️ being the one to hold me accountable, but it's friends, colleagues, and my own team wondering where my two posts are and why I haven't followed through. That's also what has made this year so much fun for our team is the culture of accountability that has been established. We've set a system of checks and balances for our goals (reducing them to micro ones as well so that we can constantly see small wins). Our team does daily stand-ups, where as the year has gone on, we've refined each one in the morning to have a specific focus so that we are prepared to go about our days and can take something meaningful into the business right away - an example, Monday Morning Huddles were often very low energy, the team suggested many ideas and what we came up with was a simple 15 minute walking huddle. No need for formality, grab a cup of coffee, walk the dog, walk to go get coffee, inside/outside, irrelevant, let's start the week casual and discuss a win outside of work. Immediately, the other huddles and intention we carry throughout the day becomes higher energy. Daily write ups detailing our 3 main goals: building pipeline, advancing pipeline, and closing pipeline keep us on track and know where we need to maintain, dial it up, or stop overrating. We also include notes and additional topics worth mentioning or following up on, along with trends seen in the field. Special shout out to Joe Byne for showing me the power behind this dual street of accountability. Lastly for myself in order to be a better leader it takes me receiving feedback so thank you to Alessandro Gadaldi, Claudia Nordheim, Talbot Wienholt, Thomas Ruffennach, Meredith Hunt, Henry Kosvic, Simon Dinkin, Daniel Schoon, and Rose Jacqueline Sikder for holding me accountable and offering me the privilege to lead you because you all are bettering me. I'm really proud of several pieces of work throughout my career, if I can toot my own horn for a minute. 💡 • Developed and deployed a global, enterprise-wide Leadership Development program in partnership with Droste Group. We are continuing to refine and reimagine the program and I'm excited for the next iteration because it might be the best one yet! • Created and launched a monthly video series featuring career journey's of employees. Angela, spotlighted below, is one of our recent employees to share her journey. The videos serve as a reminder that development is up to each person and there is no single way to find success and grow when you take accountability for your own path. • And, one of the unexpected things that brings me joy recently is being part of a team responsible for the content creation of our company LinkedIn page. This isn't a bullet in my job description, but it's also one of the best things about working at La-Z-Boy. There are so many opportunities to fall in love with work that aren't "in my job description". Using my undergrad in Communications (for the first time 😄), this allows me to flex my creative muscles and work with folks I might not otherwise. You know, the things you end up wanting to work on when the real work becomes overwhelming or too hard? This is that, exactly. I'm thankful I was asked to participate, as it's been very rewarding.🌱 There are many other really cool things I've gotten to lead or participate in over the course of 10+ years in Talent Development/Talent Management. And, I'm sure there will be many more opportunities in the next 10 years. And then, after that, I'm hoping I'll be lucky enough to retire early (JK...maybe. Isn't that a dream we all have? 🤭).

Having an accountability board is non-negotiable. One of my all-time favorite people, Jack Daly, introduced the concept of an accountability board to me a few years back. The idea is to have a board of directors for your life and set up regular check-ins with them. This group of people is supposed to hold you accountable for goals in every area of your life - work, family, friends, physical health, finances, spirituality, etc. Currently, my accountability board consists of:  1️⃣ Jamie Carr. He keeps me humble and calls me out when overlooking things, and he’s a great board member to have.  2️⃣ My wife, Cristina Martins. I can always count on her to give me her unfiltered opinion.  3️⃣ My best friend, JP – Juan Angel. Just like my wife, he also has no filter and always gives it to me straight. I am now looking to grow my accountability board beyond my immediate circle. Ideally, these folks will represent every facet of my life and have a vested interest in my well-being. Personally, I think that adding more people to my crew will bring about significant growth! What are your thoughts on the concept of having an accountability board, and who’s currently part of yours? Who is your ultimate Boss? In a bustling, high-stakes organization, Jane was the CEO—the ultimate decision-maker. She wielded power with purpose, guiding his team through challenges, celebrating victories, and shouldering the weight of responsibility. Everyone looked up to her, the one who seemed to have all the answers. But Jane knew something they didn’t: she had a boss too. It wasn’t the board of directors or a distant investor. Her boss was a subtle but ever-present force: the values she had vowed to uphold. Integrity, fairness, and the well-being of her people were the cornerstones of her leadership. These were the guiding lights that influenced every decision she made. One evening, Jane faced a dilemma. A lucrative contract offered significant profit but required cutting corners that would jeopardize employee safety. His team awaited his decision, the anticipation in their eyes a stark reminder of her influence. She wrestled with the choice. The easy answer was to sign the deal, secure the profit, and receive the accolades of shareholders. But then her true boss spoke—the voice of her values. “What kind of leader are you if you betray the trust of your people for gain?” Jane declined the deal. The short-term loss was palpable, but the long-term payoff was invaluable. Her team saw not just a leader but someone willing to sacrifice for what mattered most. As Jane reflected later, she realized leadership isn’t about being at the top. It’s about being accountable—to others, to yourself, and to the principles that guide you. In the end, the ultimate boss is not someone above you. It’s the person you must face in the mirror.

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬! That is why instead of treating them just as another to-do list in your daily rundown, it is time to look at things more personally. For example, being an accounting outsourcing partner, we do not get to meet our clients regularly. And that is why, 𝐰𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝. These meetings are important to make sure that we are working towards the same goal. This also helps us be our candid selves when sharing ideas and insights. A few months back, while I was in the US, attending accounting conferences, I got the chance to meet a few of our clients as we basked in the sunlight and sipped on our coffees. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬. So if you are getting your chance to meet your clients every now and then, count your blessings.
