🌟 Invitation to BFAN to Panel at the AGCAS Leadership Conference 2025 🌟 Black females in the UK have made significant strides in social mobility, but challenges still exist. There are still disparities to address. The Social Mobility Commission's 2023 report highlights that social mobility outcomes vary across ethnic groups. While some ethnic minorities have made notable progress, others continue to face barriers to upward mobility. Despite these challenges, many Black females are pushing forward, and continued efforts are needed to close pay and awarding gaps in our institutions. Change is possible, but it requires a focus on education, employment, and addressing systemic inequalities. In summary, while Black females in the UK have achieved notable progress in social mobility, ongoing efforts are essential to address remaining disparities and ensure equal opportunities for all. BFAN is excited to extend its thanks and acceptance for one of our members to be a panellist at the upcoming Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) Leadership Conference in January 2025. BFAN will bring its thoughts and perspectives around the topic of academia and diversity. Our members know the importance of sector change and why it's important to bring Black female and global majority needs and awareness to university career services across the UK and Ireland. The conference brings together around 200 leaders from HE careers services. The conference will bring together the brightest minds in higher education and BFAN is proud to represent our members and the community. This year’s conference is themed around the question “What matters most?” and diving deep into critical topics, starting with “What matters most in diversity?” The session will be chaired by Aranee Manoharan who leads employability at Kings College. Here are the details for BFAN members and the community to attend: 📅 Dates: 6–8 January 2025 🏨 Venue: Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel 💬 Theme: What Matters Most? 🎤 Keynote Speakers: Vivienne Stern (Universities UK) & Tom Riordan CBE (Dept. of Health & Social Care) 🏆 After Dinner Speaker: Danny Crates PLY (Paralympic Gold Medallist) Link - https://lnkd.in/eJwyVK4J The conference is a great opportunity for Black females to reflect on leadership, strategy, and the future of higher education. Join us as we come together to shape the future of our sector. 🙌🏿 📚 #AGCAS2025 #HigherEdLeadership #DiversityMatters #UniversityCareers #LeadershipConference #DiversityInAcademia #wearebfan #BFAN #BlackFemaleAcademics #BlackFemales #SocialMobility #Equality #BFAN #Empowerment

Knock, knock! The new academic year 2024-2025 brings an exciting opportunity for students and teachers to get involved in co-curricular activities and community projects. The university is calling for nominations for leadership roles within three vital entities: 1. Clubs: If you're passionate about a specific interest or hobby, consider nominating yourself to lead or co-lead a club centered around that interest. 2. Department Societies: For those deeply invested in their field of study, take the chance to spearhead a departmental society and foster a community of like-minded individuals. 3. Community Projects: Do you have a cause close to your heart? Nominate yourself to lead or co-lead a community project that creates positive change. If none of these options appeal to you, there's still an opportunity to contribute by nominating yourself for the role of secretary or joint secretary, supporting the smooth functioning of these entities. The deadline for nominations is June 4th, and both students and teachers are encouraged to participate. Visit the provided link to access the nomination document and submit your application. This is your chance to leave a lasting impact, cultivate leadership skills, and shape the co-curricular landscape of our university. “Being the recipient of the Dr. Danyal Ishaad Bhyat Achievement Award means so much to me. It means the obvious: the lightening of my financial burden as I enter my first year into university–not that this feeling can be understated. You’ll never truly understand the weight behind the words “financial burden” until you feel them press down on your shoulders from the second you look at your student account balance for the first time. However, since receiving this award, my back has been a little straighter, my shoulders a little looser, my chin a little higher. Yet this award means so much more. It means community. It means support. It means belief in your potential. It means confidence and self-assurance. It means motivation and drive. It means fervour, tenacity and profound gratitude. But most importantly, it means a hope for the future. It means the blurry vision you have of your future self enjoying the fruits of your labour and living out your aspirations becoming clearer. Being the recipient of the Dr. Danyal Ishaad Bhyat Achievement Award is like catching a glimpse of dawn after a long dark night; it means boundless hope, urging all aspiring hearts to join in the pursuit of their dreams.” The deadline for 2024 scholarship applications has been extended to June 14, 2024.
