Smucker’s Uncrustables have long been a favorite snack of NFL players since they’re great on the go and athletes can inhale large quantities of them at once like a sandworm from Dune. But now we know just how much pro footballers love the pocket-sized noshes: According to The Athletic, NFL players consume 80,000 Uncrustables per season, or roughly the weight of three Travis Kelces every week. The Denver Broncos led the way last year, eating 700 sandwiches per week, while the New Orleans Saints were the least uncrustable, consuming just 50/week—probably because there is real food to eat in New Orleans. "{All of t}he Uncrustables eaten by the NFL in one year would cover 18 yards of a football field"...and would encompass about 80,000+ of the grab-n-go snacks. The article even talks about the fact that each week the NFL eats the weight of nearly three Travis Kelces in Uncrustables. That's the funniest comparison of the week, hands down. However, I was wondering if Uncrustables were the most healthy snack the teams could come up with for their players. It was determined that while nutritionists would not normally recommend a frozen and processed sandwich as a go-to option for carbs, fat and protein, the teams have made it a staple in their rotations, because "You could throw your playbook on top of 'em, didn't make any difference. Squished, unsquished, you're gonna crush it." Quick energy, some fat and protein that is easy to digest, convenient to eat (cold or hot, squished or unsquished!), and its a comfort food. The teams even have their favorite flavor in the grape vs strawberry debate - and the winner is....strawberry. But how do they keep the strawberry, or grape jelly, from being squashed out of the first bite? "Putting the jelly in the middle and covering it with the peanut butter turned out to be the key to protecting the jelly from leaking." Brilliant. No wonder we like them so much. The NFL's secret halftime snack is three dozen sliced oranges for the visiting teams, but I like the idea of both teams eating Uncrustables even better. The fact that the Uncrustables started out as an idea for a mass-produced peanut butter and jelly sandwich for schools and it morphed over into a round, no-crust snack, is the testament to Necessity Being the Mother of Invention.
