In this intriguing article, the authors explore the disillusionment experienced by surgeons regarding electronic health records (EHRs) and their perceived lack of value. Several areas are explored, contributing both to "the why" and "how" these challenges can be addressed. (e.g. improving clinical outcomes) Cutting to the chase, the authors propose increased surgeon involvement in governance at both local and national levels. This approach aims to facilitate change adoption and unlock the promised benefits associated with EHR utilization with respect to surgical cases and workflows. https://lnkd.in/g7mtFD7n

**Unnecessary Medical Care: A Harmful Trend** In 2015, Atul Gawande, a renowned surgeon and writer, shed light on the alarming issue of unnecessary medical care in his article "Overkill" for The New Yorker. Gawande argued that the drive for profit and the pressure to perform procedures have led to a surge in unnecessary medical interventions, causing harm to patients both physically and financially. Gawande's investigation revealed that many doctors and hospitals prioritize procedures over patient care, resulting in unnecessary surgeries, tests, and treatments. This trend has significant consequences, including increased risk of complications, longer recovery times, and higher medical bills. Gawande's article highlighted the need for a shift in the healthcare system, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based medicine and patient-centered care. He advocated for a more thoughtful and measured approach to medical decision-making, prioritizing patient needs and outcomes over profit motives. **Hashtags:** #unnecessarymedicalcare #healthcarereform #patientrights #evidencebasedmedicine #patientcenteredcare Source: https://lnkd.in/gzH2kvNi Update Date: 2024-07-12T07:15:46Z

Just to double down on this concept, there is no doubt that navigating and interacting with our healthcare system is challenging and complicated. It has been well documented that people who are challenged to understand the structures and language of healthcare have different (poorer) outcomes than those who either have a better understanding or more resources to help them. It often feels, from the payer and clinical perspectives, like investing in people is hard to justify. You have to believe that given the instruction and teaching people will become better navigators and self-advocates. My Surgery is proof of that concept; delivering triple aim results and meaningful returns for over a decade by focusing on surgery and enabling patients through learning and literacy tools. If you are a health care leader who hasn’t built this sort of intervention into your stack of solutions to control costs and improve outcomes I encourage you to get in touch with us and learn how Paradigm can benefit your employees or health plan.
