Preeclampsia can start after 20 weeks of pregnancy even when a birthing person has normal blood pressure and no symptoms showing. The condition can lead to serious, sometimes fatal, complications. Key symptoms to watch for: high blood pressure, protein in the urine, swelling in the legs, and water retention. Preeclampsia can often be managed with oral or IV medications until the baby is sufficiently mature to be delivered.
