The Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG) and the Engineering Biology Research Consortium are pleased to partner on the 2024 JSPG Special Topics Issue on Advancing Science & Technology Policy for the Next-Generation Bioeconomy. We invite students, post-doctoral researchers, policy fellows, early-career researchers, and early-career professionals from around the world to submit op-eds, policy position papers, policy memos or analyses, and other articles addressing bioeconomy policy ideas and challenges. These include topics and concerns around the intersection of biology/biotechnology and artificial intelligence and machine learning, biomanufacturing, food and agriculture, energy, biodiversity, biosecurity, biotechnology regulations, and workforce development. Articles should address how the topic could impact at a global or local/regional economic level. Submission deadline: January 13, 2025. Reproducibility is one of the fundamental pillars of scientific research. The publication of flawed research indeed "misleads other researchers and undermines scientific integrity". Unfortunately, the annual number of retractions is growing by around 23% each year. Is it only a "publish or perish" problem? Ain't this question repeated like a mantra and used to excuse unethical or questionable practices? "Winner takes all" is at least as toxic to good science, encouraging you to cut corners to be the first. https://lnkd.in/es5fRFbm

From my point of view, there is one important conclusion from the story linked to this post. We need to consider quality of the science (quality of the study, experiments, results, their reproducibility… etc.) rather than the number of published research papers or “points” one can collect for them. Sometimes, the good research does not take a month, half a year, a year… it can take even a couple of years! Right now strategy “publish or perish” does not even consider that. I wish our Ministry of Higher Education (or maybe I should say not only ours but generally in whole world) will reconsider their approach to science evaluation. That’s my little wish this year :-)

Today, I received an email from ScholarGPS announcing that "Your strong publication record, the impact of your work, and the notable quality of your scholarly contributions have placed you in the top 0.5% of all scholars worldwide." My ranking is specificly interesting in the areas of "protein" and "whey protein". Although there are a few other ranking systems that assess scientists and scholars globally, but I find #ScholarGPS ranking intriguing. When you visit the ScholarGPS website, you can see comprehensive rankings of scientists based on both the quality and quantity of their work in various fields. This makes it an interesting and potentially valuable tool for gauging scholarly impact of yourself and colleagues. https://lnkd.in/gFjZJFvf

PhD Chronicles: A Journey of Intense Research and Discovery The past few months have been a whirlwind of laboratory hours, field studies, and deep dives into complex data analysis. It kept me away from the online world for a while, but I’m excited to share the progress. I’ve been engrossed in understanding the impact of dam activities on aquatic environments, particularly focusing on how they influence the chemistry of the ecosystem. From analyzing physicochemical parameters to detecting organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), it’s been a challenging yet rewarding experience. The good news is that the insights are starting to come together. I’m currently wrapping up several review papers on these findings, which I hope to share soon with the academic community. Grateful for the support from my mentor and colleague Senami Anko, and the inspiration from the environment itself. As my PhD thesis hits 7,000 reads, some words of wisdom to up and coming PhD students... 😎 I strongly suggest that you do not publish a complete thesis as a 'book', rather publish each section (i.e. chapter) as separate, individual scientific publications (more the norm now). Honored to have my first first-author paper published in 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢. Our work, titled "A large-scale reaction dataset of mechanistic pathways of organic reactions" (https://lnkd.in/gJ6TpV9J) introduces 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿, a novel method that automates the generation of chemically reasonable reaction mechanisms by combining data-driven approaches with expert knowledge. We hope that the dataset generated through this method, covering various reaction types, will become an invaluable resource for researchers working on reaction prediction and other areas within the chemical intelligence community. By contributing to the open science movement, we aim to support further advancements in the prediction and understanding of organic reactions.
