This weekend's political violence underscores the urgent need to come together to address the critical issues facing our communities, including the epidemic of firearm violence and the polarization that divides our nation. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) stands firmly against all acts of violence, particularly those involving firearms. Firearm violence is a public health crisis that continues to devastate individuals, families, and communities. Moreover, polarization in our nation exacerbates this issue. To address this crisis, public health must continue to foster open and constructive dialogue for peace and reconciliation within our communities. By rebuilding the social network, reconciling our differences, and finding peaceful solutions, we can move towards a safer, healthier, and more united society. What's more, I am especially proud to report that Youth Alive!'s efforts are making a measurable difference in Oakland. According to the latest data from the Oakland Police Department’s weekly crime report: -Homicides have decreased by 13%. -Non-fatal firearm assaults have decreased by 33%. The Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative (CDHPI) is a knowledge hub for information to help inform promising practices in homicide prevention. Their goal is to create a partnership that will foster collaborative, cross-sectoral research to identify unique individual and community-level risk factors that may increase exposure to domestic violence and homicide for particular populations. The Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative with Vulnerable Populations (CDHPIVP) explores the needs of particular populations that are at increased risk.
