“Homelessness is a choice of how we organise society.” 💬 These powerful words from Professor Cameron Parsell challenge everything we think we know about homelessness. At this year’s Annual Forum on Women and Homelessness, experts like Parsell, Professor Selena Bartlett, Fiona Caniglia and Amy Blair explored the societal and structural issues that perpetuate homelessness. At ISBH, we have witnessed firsthand the profound negative impact that punitive measures have on individuals experiencing homelessness. Sweeping encampments and criminalizing homelessness only serve to exacerbate the crisis, causing further trauma and instability for those already in vulnerable situations. These actions do not address the root causes of homelessness nor do they provide sustainable solutions. Moreover, we must acknowledge that such punitive measures disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. This policy perpetuates systemic inequalities and undermines efforts to create a more just and equitable society. https://lnkd.in/ebzHUZug #HousingIsHealthcare

In August, Juno submitted our feedback on the National Housing and Homelessness Bill 2024 (No. 2). We extend our gratitude to Senator David Pocock and Kylea Tink MP for introducing this crucial legislation. The Bill would require the Housing Minister to develop and implement a 10 year housing and homelessness plan, while also enshrining the right to housing as a key objective guiding the plan and policy making. It’s a vital step toward systemic reform and lasting change. In our Submission we also stress the need for a gendered analysis in housing policy, as we know women are disproportionately affected by homelessness and have unique support needs: - Women accounted for 81.7% of the increase in homelessness from 2016 to 2021. - Family violence is a leading cause, with a significant number of women seeking support from homelessness services. - Housing affordability issues are hitting women hard, with many turning to support services despite being employed. We’re committed to working with all levels of government to see an end to homelessness. Leadership. Resources. Consistent alignment around best practices. This is how it’s done.
The 150 + partners in the All Neighbors Coalition are collectively moving the needle on homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties. The strategies are working. The coalition has housed more than 10,100 people and reduced unsheltered homelessness by 24% since we overhauled our homeless response system in 2021. There is much more work to be done across Dallas and Collins Counties. Our next phase includes a $30 million expanded rehousing and Street-to-Home response, with a continued focus on advancing racial equity by removing barriers that perpetuate disparities. Most support systems to end homelessness are designed with men in mind. In reality, womens’ experience of homelessness and support systems can be very different from men. Because of this, New Zealand’s current efforts to address homelessness are failing our wāhine. To address this gap, we must first understand how the needs of women experiencing homelessness are different to that of men. We asked this question in our report on women’s homelessness which we are releasing later this week. Stay tuned for further insights into women’s homelessness, and the solutions emerging. #letsendwomenshomelessness #homesforallwomen #safehousingforwomen

The team at StreetSmart have been devastated by the recent increase in violence towards women. From our work we know that family and domestic violence is the largest driver of homelessness for women and children in Australia. It is the main reason why women and children leave their homes and communities, and then face homelessness, poverty, and isolation. Right now critical services, that can keep women safe, are underfunded and too many women are turned away and have to return to dangerous relationships. Specialist domestic and family violence services, specialist homelessness services, and community legal centres all need more resources, if we are to protect women. May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month and through our grant making, material aid program SleepSafe and advocacy, we will continue to respond, where we can, to boost capacity of frontline services. We welcome the recent discussions and commitments while continuing to call for national leadership and Governments, at all levels, to provide the frontline funding required to immediately respond to this crisis and invest in the solutions backed by experts and sector leaders. https://lnkd.in/gq5hnbwG #homelssness #endinghomelessness #FDV #domesticviolence #women #housing

The progress Washington state has made on youth homelessness in recent years is stunning. And hopeful. 10,000 fewer youth experiencing homelessness this in 2022 than in 2016. 10,000 young people with stable housing instead of a shelter, a bridge or some other unsafe and unstable situation. That's an exciting 40% drop. It's important to remember that the path from youth homelessness into adult homelessness is clear - and our state has disrupted that pathway for 10,000 young people each year. https://lnkd.in/gfDW8aRG
