Many of us, as parents of high schoolers today, belong to a generation where exam results and class ranks were everything. We were taught to associate with only the top rankers in the class, sit with them, and even share our lunch breaks with them. The front rows were reserved for the highest achievers, and the back-benchers were often seen as the ones lagging behind. After every half-yearly and annual exam, our focus was always on knowing our rank. If we weren’t in the top 10, we were often labeled as underperformers. This mindset shaped our generation. But it’s time to move beyond that for our children. Let's stop measuring their worth by exam scores alone. While marks do matter, they don’t define a child’s potential or future. The real markers of success are the skills children develop as they grow — skills like communication, learning capacity, responsibility, leadership, and organizational abilities. What’s most important during high school is that children truly enjoy the experience. As we look back on our own school days, many of us wish we had focused less on chasing marks and ranks and more on the experiences that shape who we become. Now, it's our turn to give our children the opportunity to make the most of these years. Do grades matter? To me, not really. I pursue courses to enhance my knowledge, focusing on the learning experience rather than the grades I receive.
