Millions of children missing basic education can affect future workforce skill levels and poverty cycles, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, which has the highest number of out-of-school children. Between 2000 and 2023, Central and Southern Asia achieved a 72% reduction in out-of-school primary-age children, the largest global improvement. Meanwhile, sub-Saharan Africa only managed a 4.4% decrease. This highlights the critical need for educational investment in regions still lagging behind.

Today is #WorldTeachersDay! Teachers are crucial to ensuring we meet our 2030 goal of quality and inclusive education for all. However, teachers are facing unprecedented barriers to the classroom and those impacts are being felt by education systems around the world. ➡️ According to UNESCO, the world is facing a shortage of nearly 44 million teachers needed to achieve universal primary and secondary education by 2030. ➡️ Teachers in Venezuela earn just $10-$30 USD/month—the lowest in the region—and face enormous transportation barriers. ➡️ Educators in Malawi suffer one of the highest pupil-to-teacher ratios in the world, with an average of 59 students per teacher in primary schools. The good news is Jesuit education networks at the margins of exclusion (like Federación Internacional de Fe y Alegría) are implementing creative and innovative solutions to these problems. Did you know that 1 in 4 girls in Uganda drops out of school before completing primary education. Furthermore 63% of girls aged 15-19 are out of school, compared to 55% of boys. These statistics are staggering, but they also represent an incredible opportunity for change. The population of African children is estimated to reach 1 billion in 2055, making it the continent with the largest number of children. This denotes how investing on children is critical and determinant for achieving Africa’s development agenda. Poverty, unemployment, and peace and security can be achieved through investing in education. The impact of lack of education on children is holistic as it affects children’s right to development, excludes them from future work opportunities, resulting in an intergenerational cycle of poverty, and exposes them to further violence, abuse and exploitation. While providing free period products does not solve the problem of period poverty, it is a good first step. Te Tira Ahu Pae have been providing Massey University students with period products for three years now. This initiative has provided 1000’s of menstrual cups, pads and tampons to students across Massey’s three campuses. Shout out to Noor Fatima, PhD who has taken the lead on this project for the advocacy team.  A period should not be a barrier to education. The New Zealand government acknowledged this by making menstrual products available to young people in schools. It would be great to see this taken a step further for students in tertiary education.
