“My generation was supposed to experience something different. Instead, we’ve traveled backward in time. What we want is for the cruelty being endured by women and girls in Afghanistan to be called what it actually is: gender apartheid.” Nazila Jamshidi, advocate and campaigner for End Gender Apartheid, shares why the terminology “gender apartheid” is critical for creating change for Afghan women and girls via The Diplomat ➡️ mala.la/40fpkY2

Polarisation tends to manifest itself more violently around gender. Brazilian pastor and Executive Secretary of the Fundação Luterana de Diaconia, Rev. Cibele Kuss, contributed to a critical conversation at the ACT Alliance General Assembly on countering polarisation and fundamentalisms. Rev. Kuss referred to the role of men: "I want to call on men to take responsibility to reduce polarization around gender. It is urgent that they decolonise their masculinity." This interactive timeline allows you to listen to Afghan women's first-hand stories of resistance and the impacts of the escalating gender apartheid in Afghanistan. "These women’s stories of endurance and resistance reveal the stark realities of life under a legal system that curtails freedom, stifles potential, and erodes dignity, yet they also illuminate the unyielding spirit and strength of each woman and girl. The struggle for women's rights in Iran is marked by a complex intersection of religious traditions, legal frameworks, and societal movements. Despite facing systemic discrimination under laws rooted in Iran's interpretation of Islamic Sharia, women have continually resisted, advocating for greater gender equality. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, many advancements made during the Pahlavi era were reversed, severely restricting women’s rights in areas like divorce, marriage, and legal standing. However, movements such as "Women, Life, Freedom" have gained traction, uniting women in their fight against oppressive laws. Through grassroots efforts and global awareness, Iranian women continue to push for transformative change, demonstrating resilience and courage despite enduring adversity. It was an honor to meet and spend time with the incomparable Gloria Steinem! A hero and feminist icon to many (myself included), Gloria's tireless advocacy for gender equality and social justice has paved the way for countless women and men around the world. We discussed some of the difficult issues facing women across the world, including the potential for a repeal of the ban on female genital mutilation in Gambia. (Their 2015 ban made all acts of FGM a criminal offense, and the Gambian government initially adopted a national strategy to end the practice in the country by 2030). It is a terrible development that the National Assembly is considering adopting an amendment to reverse course. We won’t sit by quietly. Kalliopi Mingeirou We talked about the desperate need for peace in the Middle East where the conflict continues to disproportionately impact women and children who are victims of senseless violence. It’s high time for long term solutions and for peace to prevail. We talked about the staggering inequality in the world, especially in India - a country she knows well (and where outlandish displays of nouveau riche wealth are lauded. Side note: The world as a whole is more prosperous thanks to growth in China and India in the last few decades, but the distribution of wealth within many countries including India, the US, Brazil and Mexico to name but a few, is highly highly unequal) Gloria’s life and work remind us that change is possible when we stand together. Regardless of the uphill battles we face, it’s critical that we continue the fight for equality and justice, drawing strength from the trailblazers who have come before us. Thank you, Gloria. #TogetherWeCan #CollectiveAction #WomenPeace #WomenSecurity #FeministFuture #GenderEquality #SocialJustice #WomenInConflict #FGM

My message for the ILGA World Conference we have overcome obstacles before, and we will do it again. Together, we’ve achieved historic wins: decriminalisation, recognition of gender identity, marriage equality. Yet today, much remains to be done as we witness regressive laws and hateful narratives to divide and silence. The UN will continue to stand firmly at your side, including through our new strategy to end violence, discrimination, and harmful practices against LGBTIQ+ people. By amplifying voices, strengthening alliances, and ensuring human rights remain our guiding force, we will keep moving forward, standing strong – together. https://lnkd.in/eS7vGyPm

Over 80 decrees have been issued against Afghan women and girls, denying them the ability to: ☑️ speak in public ☑️ receive education after the age of 12 ☑️ work in government offices ☑️ go to parks As the Taliban enforces repressive and patriarchal rules, Afghan women continue to resist despite the threat of arrest, torture, and sexual violence. Afghan organizers are calling on the international community to recognize their experiences for what it is: gender apartheid. Afghan women and girls have a long history of resilience in the fight for gender justice. Through our work with our partners, we amplify their voices and report how the Taliban's actions amount to gender persecution. In one of our recent publications, we profile Afghan women organizers who tell their stories of resistance and share their visions for the future. "If the international community does nothing else to secure the rights of Afghan women, it should at least recognize this gender apartheid in Afghanistan."
