Just read through Mark's latest blog piece, and two major insights really stand out. First, the need for a unified methodology to assess the cumulative impacts of road closures on communities is spot on. By integrating both engineering and planning perspectives, the piece outlines a framework that allows urban planners and engineers to quantify disruptions—past, present, and future—supporting the prediction of their social, economic, and environmental costs. The second key insight is that this data could help identify "Disruption Free Corridors"—specific areas for utilidors, a forward-looking solution that supports long-term sustainability goals. These corridors offer a practical path to improving infrastructure resilience while minimizing disruptions to local communities. If we unpack this a little more, these physical corridors could form the literal backbone for urban digital twins and smart city initiatives, organizing the infrastructure and information needed to unlock the full potential of data-driven urban planning and management. Together, these insights lay the foundation for a much-needed paradigm shift in how we plan, build, and maintain urban infrastructure while improving people's lives. 🛑 It’s just another road closure. Who cares? There are hundreds of road closures per day in our major cities. Are they equally distributed and all having the same impact and duration across the city? For sure not. When you view all road cuts as impacts to community vulnerability, the connection is made between the urban infrastructure, that makes a city viable, and urban planning. Creating a data foundation to include all road closures opens the door for more contributions from planners to investigate impacts to specific communities, districts, and venues. And, for engineers to contribute precise locations of assets and what the True Costs of our business-as-usual approach to urban infrastructure. Together, there might be a plan to reverse the trend of aging infrastructure in our existing cities into a Smart Foundation for the cities of the future. At Acuitas 3D, we’re developing a Disruption Impact Index to add to the DOI and begin this discussion. Let’s build smarter, stronger cities together! 🌆💡 #UrbanPlanning #BigData #SmartCities #utilidor #futureproofing Shannon McElvaney; Holger Kessler; Simon Navin; Terri Matthews; Wallace Walrod; Devin Lavigne; Frank Vallese Sc.D. Cities of the Future: How GIS is Revolutionizing Urban Planning Imagine a city that thrives, not just survives. A place where traffic flows seamlessly, green spaces flourish, and communities feel empowered. This isn't science fiction – it's the potential of Geospatial Technology transforming urban planning as we know it. ️ Forget the dusty old blueprints – GIS is a digital game-changer. It's like having a superhero sidekick for urban planners, one that analyzes data, predicts trends, and helps design cities for the future. Here's how GIS is making a real impact: 1. Building Smarter, Not Bigger: No more urban sprawl! GIS helps planners identify areas for smart, compact development, prioritizing walkable communities with parks and open spaces. Think vibrant neighborhoods where everything you need is just a stroll away. 2. Traffic Flow Like Magic: Traffic jams become a thing of the past. GIS analyzes traffic patterns and hotspots, allowing planners to optimize public transport routes and improve road networks. Imagine getting across town in record time, with less pollution and more peace of mind. 3. Nature Knows Best: GIS helps us become better stewards of our environment. It identifies sensitive areas, predicts development impact, and even aids in habitat restoration. Think sustainable cities that coexist with nature, not against it. 4. Disaster? We're Ready! GIS is a lifesaver when disaster strikes. By mapping vulnerable areas and critical infrastructure, planners can develop effective response plans, minimize damage, and keep communities safe. ️ 5. Your Voice Matters: Gone are the days of top-down planning. GIS empowers communities! Interactive maps and citizen science initiatives allow residents to participate in shaping their city's future. It's your city, after all, and your voice matters. The Future is Now: As technology advances, so does GIS. It's not just about fancy maps anymore; it's about creating cities that are not only efficient but also livable, sustainable, and truly reflect the needs of their residents. ✨ Ready to learn more?
