So, I had this interesting conversation with the CEO of a large multinational FMCG company about the importance of ‘emotional marketing’. He was particularly triggered by the findings from Pierrine Consulting's recent Consumer Sentiments’ Study spanning three key African countries and the collaborative study executed by the IRIS global network (across 17 countries and multiple continents). Emotional marketing is a powerful strategy (more so, at a time like this), that allows brands to tap into the human psyche, create meaningful connections and drive brand affinity, beyond transactional-engagements. According to Harvard Business Review (HBR), the emotional connection between a customer and a brand is 52% more valuable than customer satisfaction. In other words, customers connected to a brand emotionally can generate 52% more revenue in the long run. Hence, the most effective way to maximize customer value is to connect with customers at an emotional level – tapping into their fundamental motivations and fulfilling their deep, often unspoken emotional needs. I found this refreshing. Misperceptions and underestimations mean being an effective marketing leader is not for the faint of heart. But leaning in to the full scope of the value chain marketing can support is both rewarding and fun! Points from this Harvard Business Review article that resonated, and I would suggest all executives think about: * there is growing awareness of what marketing can do to "forge the bond" between growth and customer satisfaction * digital, and its associated transparency, has radically shortened the shelf life of any new competitive advantage. * delivering above-market growth increasingly hinges on differentiating the customer experience and building tighter customer relationships * companies that use customer analytics extensively are more than 2x likely to generate above-average profits as those that don’t.
