For the longest time, I struggle between having a #performancereview or not, given its perceived negative impression. I believe the debate over its use case has been ongoing for years. Some companies continue to run it, albeit in an old-fashioned way. Some detest and drop it. After listening to this podcast, I realised there is nothing wrong with the spirit of performance reviews. All of us want to know how we can do better at work. We want to get feedback. But probably why we detest performance reviews is the execution of it… 1. Only hearing the truths once a year and nearing the end of the review (i.e. lack of frequent check-ins) 2. Unclear expectations and scoring 3. Forced ranking and bell-curving where someone has to be a C or D grader even if that person did accomplish their objectives 4. Lack of compassion and helpful feedback, aka untrained assessors and managers So, should we throw away the performance review? There is no one-size-fits-all. You choose the best option to drive performance. Regardless you have it or not, feedback is something we all want.
