How can we interrogate systems, relationships, and ways of engaging with the world around us? Authors Zaina Arafat (Lambda Award winning author and educator), Premilla Nadasen (American historian and activist), and Ibi Zoboi (New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist) reflect on community building and systemic injustice through the lens of narrative nonfiction, Afrofuturism, and other forms of storytelling. This event is part of the Changemaker Authors Series, a series of conversations taking place over the course of 2025 at the intersections of grief, resistance, and storytelling. The series is a new iteration of the popular Changemaker Authors Conference.

I know so many folks in philanthropy and the social sector who are thinking about systems change. But how often do we employ systems thinking? I spent over 20 years in education and got to know a lot about education systems, but rarely were we connecting the dots between education and the political, economic, health and environmental systems. I think we all know these systems are deeply interconnected, we all feel it, we experience it in our daily lives - and yet, the solutions that were put forward + the analysis we offer (of which I was party to) rarely acknowledges or incorporates the larger system forces that we were a part of. How would it look differently if we did? And what's needed to start seeing our work in more integrated ways? Who's doing this well? This episode of Seen on Radio started reminded me of this question... one I bumped up against time and time again in my work at CZI (also - want to acknowledge that Indigenous communities have been integrating this way of thinking into their culture and practices for a long time... but for those who need the mathematical model to convince you - this is interesting). This episode also inspires another question - IF we acknowledge that growth should not be infinite - how would that change the way we develop solutions in philanthropy and the social sector? How much of our thinking has been influenced the the assumption that markets should always keep growing? https://lnkd.in/g-Xt8n2f Also - this whole series is so good. I highly recommend it.

The Encyclopedia of Heroism Studies is a comprehensive living reference work - the brainchild of Editors: Scott T. Allison James K Beggan and George R Goethals, published by Springer Nature Group, it is the first encyclopedia in the growing field of heroism studies and is designed to appeal to a broad readership, including professionals, academics, students, and teachers. If you're interested in learning about the field of heroism studies, this encyclopedia is an excellent resource to start with. I have written a short article on Collaborative Heroism, which explores the evolution of heroism in the digital age. It sums up my theoretical work in this area. https://lnkd.in/gudyvmuN

Folk tales were a major ingredient of community lore in traditional society, a craft that is almost forgotten in modern society. Not only are the stories lost but with the loss goes the cultural and social activities that were the fabric that undergirded the craft and strengthened community bonds. Tell Me a Story draws from this traditional storytelling culture. It is an attempt to preserve that unique craft of storytelling, the stories and the lessons that came with the tales. It is noteworthy that such traditional folklore was not only entertaining but was also a source of moral lessons that informed society’s day-to-day well-being. This collection of ten folktales touches on societal aspects such as trust, greed, friendship, respect, and deception, among many others. In the process, the author gives readers a glimpse of the foundations that kept society strong. The lessons, therein, are as relevant today as they were in times that have passed, underlining the fact that human beings have hardly changed despite advances made over many centuries. What Others Say: “Very imaginative with moral lessons that can be learnt from the conduct of the characters. Presented in the tone of pre-literate society storytelling, they take the reader on a captivating journey.” – Harriet Irungu, Editor and Student of Literature. “This is an invaluable collection of stories that captures both the craft of storytelling and the moral lessons that come with the stories. It is a timely publication for modern times where values and community interest are on a downward slide.” – Anonymous.

David Gilbertson’s Generational Novel, A Fine Line, Dazzles As It Recounts The Extraordinary Lives Of Ordinary People In Victorian Liverpool, Dundee And On The Battlefields Of WWI On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, set in Victorian Liverpool, Dundee and the battlefields of WWI, David Gilbertson’s generational saga, A Fine Line, shares the lives of three families whose lives are inextricably linked. A Fine Line Unputdownable generational saga, A Fine Line by David Gilbertson, captivates all those with a penchant for the genre or a love of social history. The rich tapestry of multi-dimensional characters are all doing what they can to survive one of the most transformational times in our history, which has been forensically researched to create an authentic historical context, showcasing how these societal changes and world events impact on their lives. Set between Victorian Liverpool and Dundee and the battlefields of the First World War, A Fine Line is story of the extraordinary lives of ordinary people. Three families are facing the perils of life on the economic cliff-edge, where a single misstep can send lives plunging out of control. Crossing a century of dramatic change, their journey begins in the aftermath of the slave trade, moving through the era of Empire expansion and Industrial Revolution to a time of religious strife and global conflict. The world they navigate is one fraught with hazard in which exploitation, zealotry and violence lead to rape, prostitution, fraud, and murder. At its heart, two indomitable women – lifelong friends – choose very different paths as they strive to hold their worlds together, and to survive. #bookrecommendations #historicalfiction #generational #bookpromotion READ MORE NOW https://lnkd.in/eVw2r79A

I loved this Preamble, w/Rajiv V. and Sharon McMahon, as they explored our nation's challenges and opportunities. It's a conversation that offers hope and actionable ideas—precisely what we need right now. https://lnkd.in/etakKGeQ It touches on: ✔️ Unsung civic leaders: Sharon’s new bestselling book, The Small and the Mighty, shares stories of Americans who, with limited resources, made significant changes in history. These are individuals without statutes, yet their contributions made a difference for future generations. ✔️ Choosing hope: Sharon emphasizes that hope isn’t a feeling we wait for – it’s a daily choice. ✔️ Building trust and combatting misinformation: Sharon talks about the importance of transparency and fairness and how actively listening to others is the key to building trust and countering misinformation online. ✔️ The power of engaging across differences: Sharon believes engaging with those we might see as “enemies” is key to social change. She also says we need to ensure folks have the skills, modeling, and opportunities to practice difficult conversations with those we disagree with. ✔️ Gen Z’s civic potential: Sharon is optimistic about our democracy because she believes Gen Z is the most civically engaged generation in history.
