Connor Robison, of Biloxi, Mississippi, has done a whole 180 with his life since joining the TNC's conservation program, GulfCorps. "My friends saw how GulfCorps affected me. Before, I was robbing drug dealers and living the street life. My friends saw how GulfCorps gave me an opportunity to get away from all that. I got my high school diploma, learned professionalism, and focused on a career and life that would lead me somewhere—not a ditch or prison. They saw that, and they wanted the same thing. Some of them progressed, too. I got a buddy who's a foreman at a tree company now because of his experience. I got another buddy who's gotten into the Forest Service," said Connor." The GulfCorps, a program managed by NOAA and The Nature Conservancy, helps restore Gulf Coast habitat and provides young people with a pathway to environmental careers. Meet GulfCorps alumnus Connor Robison and learn how the program transformed his life. Read more about Connor's story. https://lnkd.in/gMqiSCyp

A display of Townsville’s better nature: 🌱 A pilot project received the green light to see select residents of Townsville’s Men’s Low-Custody Correctional Complex working together with Envite Environment to restore the health of Mundy Creek and reduce negative impacts to the reef catchment. Supervised prisoners partnered with conservation professionals from Envite Environment, Townsville City Council, and Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. to rehabilitate and beautify the select area of the Creek. Activities included weed management, erosion control and bank stabilisation, rubbish removal, and planting of native seedlings — all to minimise sediment runoff and see better quality water reaching our Reef. “We were very excited to have this opportunity to work with Queensland Corrective Services, says project leader, Natasha Rodwell. This program is a fantastic community service initiative that provides meaningful activities for participants to connect with nature and gain valuable skills to increase employment opportunities — all the while helping to protect and restore our valuable waterways.” “The project also offers significant positive mental health outcomes for everyone involved.” The ‘Reef Revolution — Empowerment Through Nature’ project was one of 3 successful projects to receive kickstart funding from the Townsville Community Action Plan for Rivers & Reef. Projects addressed waterway issues of priority as identified by Townsville itself. 👉 Learn more about the Community Action Plan (CAP) projects here: https://lnkd.in/g2CRDhXi Townsville's CAP has been made possible by the partnership between the Australian Government's Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and is co-led by the Healthy Waters Partnership and Reef Ecologic. We're embarking on an incredible journey to save whales and our goal is to be able to intercept Japan's new mega whaling factory ship, the Kangei Maru. With Iceland's 2024 whale season essentially cancelled, we're refocussing on a renewed threat; Japan's emboldened whaling industry. We're using the northern summer melt to sail the M/Y John Paul DeJoria with a crew of 26 mainly volunteers from 13 countries from Dublin though the seldom used polar waters of the North West passage (across the top of Canada and past Alaska) to reach the North Pacific. The notoriously difficult passage has only been completed in its entirety by 262 vessels in history. “The plan is to go after the world's largest and most dangerous whaling ship, the Kangei Maru, and lock its operations…we have to get to the Pacific and the shortest route to the North Pacific is through the Northwest Passage.” said Captain Paul Watson. The mission, termed Operation Kangei Maru, marks 50 years of Paul Watson's anti-whaling marine activism, “this is the most high stakes mission in all my years of opposing whaling in the world’s oceans” stated Watson. “With a brand-new 50 million dollar long range factory ship, Japan will not likely need to import whale meat from Iceland in the future. Japan’s new factory ship, the Kangei Maru, cannot be allowed to return to high seas whaling,” says Locky MacLean, Ship Operations Director at CPWF. Japan, whose Antarctic research whaling program JARPA was deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice in 2014, makes no qualms about its intentions to resume commercial whaling. They are presently testing the new factory vessel, engaging in whaling operations off the east coast of Sapporo, Japan’s northernmost island. ABOUT CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON FOUNDATION: The Captain Paul Foundation, a not for profit dedicated to marine conservation was founded in 2022 by esteemed environmental and conservation activist Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace and founder of Sea Shepherd. Committed to halting habitat destruction and wildlife slaughter in the world’s oceans, the foundation aims to safeguard marine ecosystems and species. It uses innovative direct-action tactics to expose and confront illegal activities at sea. HIGH SEAS WHALING BACKGROUND: On 31 March 2014, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Japan’s whaling activities in Antarctica did not comply with Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW), which permits whaling for scientific purposes. Japan continued its operations, in breach of the ruling for two more seasons before ceasing its whaling operations in the Antarctic. Since then, Japan has maintained it will only allow for coastal whaling in the future. Despite this a purpose-built high seas factory ship, the 112 meter KANGEI MARU, capable of traveling to Antarctica without resupplying has recently been launched and has already returned from its first whaling mission.

Fresh water is critical to life, and yet faces many threats, including climate change, habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. But collaborative conservation and sustained support can lead us to long-term protection and stewardship of freshwater ecosystems and habitat. On this #NationalPhilanthropyDay, WWF-Canada is thrilled to announce that we are among the recipients of a $20 million gift for freshwater conservation, all thanks to philanthropist John McCutcheon. The bequest is the largest private donation by an individual to freshwater conservation in Canada’s history, and it recognizes how important freshwater systems are for the well-being of wildlife, and us. Known as the Canada Freshwater Challenge Fund, the gift will be distributed across seven organizations: DataStream, the Nature Conservancy of Canada/Conservation de la nature Canada, WWF-Canada, Wildlife Conservation Society, Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust, Ontario Water Centre / ClearWater Farm and the International Institute for Sustainable Development – Experimental Lakes Area.

A nature reserve in SE London is under threat of industrial development. Cory wants to expand its waste-burning facility onto the nature reserve, threatening rare species and vital open space. There is other, industrial land that could be built on instead, but Cory appear to have chosen profits over nature. I'm representing the community campaign at the DCO examination to protect the nature reserve. Please support the campaign on CrowdJustice if you can. https://lnkd.in/gBr4wB_R

IS THE BALTIMORE HARBOR SWIMMABLE? YES, it is. Routine monitoring has found that Baltimore Harbor generally meets the Maryland standard for swimming, as long as it has not rained within the prior 48 hours. Swimmable Cities charter signatory Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore recently published their 2024 Healthy Harbor report card. Waterfront Partnership established the Healthy Harbor Initiative in 2010 to focus on the environmental restoration of Baltimore Harbor with the goal of creating a swimmable and fishable waterfront. The Healthy Harbor Report Card is an annual report on the progress toward that goal. The water quality data in the report was gathered by both Blue Water Baltimore and the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore throughout 2023. In consultation with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Waterfront Partnership provides analysis and conclusions for this report. A lot has changed, amongst others: 1. 🪸The marine ecosystem improved 2. 🗑️The way the world tackles waterborne trash 3. 🕳️Sewer overflows were significantly reduced And not to be forgotten: mr Trash wheel celebrated good 10th birthday! 🎂 🎉🥳 Read all about it in the document below. #swimmablecities #RightToSwim #NatureRights #GenerationRestoration UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Laurie Schwartz Adam Lindquist Matt Kujava Aaron Augustine Cuison Leanna Wetmore

From our friends at Turtle Cove Research Center: please consider helping them raise the funds for their next phase of solar battery resilience in their groundbreaking facilities! Wonderful and Supportive Friends of Turtle Cove: Southeastern's 2024 Giving Day is upon us again-----and it is only two days away----this Wednesday, September 18, 2024. As you all already know, our Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station program has won first place (as an individual Southeastern program) the past 4 years running, and I am hoping that this year will make it 5 in a row. We have only been able to do this because you, our dear Turtle Cove friends, who are without question the best friends a program could ever hope to have! And me and our staff sincerely thank you all for your loyal support over all these years. This year, Giving Day 2024, we are again fundraising for a Net-Zero Solar Panel/Battery Back-Up Electrical System at Turtle Cove itself, on the south shore of Pass Manchac, as part of our post-IDA renovations to help "future-proof" Turtle Cove. We already have had a system at our Turtle Cove Galva Canal Boatshed in Manchac, and it has performed outstandingly for us. Being "net zero" is one of the best things we have ever done, and is so important in the effort to address climate change. Last year we raised approximately $20,000 towards the estimated $85,000 price tag for doing this same thing at Turtle Cove. So we again want to try to reach this goal, and to do it this year. Check out our own Turtle Cove Giving Day website at: https://lnkd.in/gbnr7_FG and donate there. Note that the system we are aiming for at Turtle Cove is a bit different from the one at the Galva boatshed in that it will have the solar panels on a "standing frame" in the Turtle Cove yard as opposed to on the roof. And this is a great time to do it, as we are undergoing the post-IDA renovations at Turtle Cove in which a major component is the replacement of the beautiful 1908 original French Tile roof with a steel shingle look-alike that will now be able to withstand hurricane force winds. SIDE NOTE: Don't worry, we have saved the approx. 2,000 original French Tiles to be used in future art, fundraising and donation/gift activities----more on that later......See the Link above for photos of our Galva solar system and Turtle Cove roof renovation activities. So starting this Wednesday morning, please go to the website https://lnkd.in/gbnr7_FG and help support our efforts for a net-zero solar system at the Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station on Pass Manchac. I'll be sending you reminders and updates over the next few days. And again, thank you for all of the support you have given us over the years---we greatly appreciate all you have done, and look forward to achieving more milestones with you in the future.
