US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes the integral role of the ocean on our climate systems, with their new Climate Change Indicators in the United States report including a marine heatwave indicator for the first time. It also covers marine species distribution, coastal flooding, sea ice loss, ocean acidification, and more. You can dig into the details here. It’s yet another sobering climate report…so please remember: the ocean offers powerful solutions to help us fight and adapt to climate change. Ocean-based climate solutions--including renewable energy, green shipping, blue carbon & more--can provide up to 35% of the emission reductions needed to reach global climate goals. We need #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/ePKy4kTK

Thank you for sharing useful insights. I agree that the relationship between these two strategies is not linear, and they should not be viewed as sequential steps. Instead, they are interconnected, necessitating a more integrated approach. One useful concept here could be “Elasticity” in sustainable practices—combining mitigation with adaptive strategies through the adoption of forward-thinking, ‘light’ technological solutions. These solutions should not merely be reactive but proactive, focusing on necessary innovations that are flexible enough to create lasting impacts. By fostering a shift in mindset towards preventative measures—akin to preventive medicine rather than merely treating symptoms—we can cultivate a cultural pattern of well-being and sustainability. This approach not only addresses immediate environmental challenges but also ensures long-term resilience and sustainability.
Interesting representation of the difference between Climate mitigation and adaptation Climate mitigation and adaptation are two complementary approaches to addressing the challenge of climate change. ● Climate mitigation is the action of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhancing sinks. GHGs are the primary cause of climate change, so by reducing emissions, we can slow the pace and severity of climate change. ● Climate adaptation is the process of adjusting to the impacts of climate change that are already happening or are expected to happen in the future. This can include things like building seawalls to protect against rising sea levels, developing drought-resistant crops, and improving early warning systems for extreme weather events. Both #mitigation and #adaptation are important, and they work together to help us build a more resilient and sustainable future. #climatechange #sustainability #climateadaptation #climatemitigation #environment #climateaction #biodiversity #energy #renewableenergy

While both strategies are crucial in addressing climate change, mitigation targets the root cause of the problem, while adaptation deals with its effects.

food for thought Mitigation or Adaptation... hmmmm!! Mitigation? ( well how do we address or eradicate the root cause), Adaptation you think? ( well for how long)

🤔 Ever wondered how hot YOUR suburb could get if we don’t take the necessary actions to cut climate emissions? 🤓 Well, today you can find out, with The Climate Council's new interactive Heat Map tool. The tool allows you to explore the heat effects of climate change on specific locations around Australia 🧭 Check out the tool here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gfuqJ8kX #ccheatmap #adaptation #environmenteducation #victorianteachers #environmentalscience

Often times, I read people use the term interchangeably but they are in fact two different matters. Yet, it's important to know that they complement each other. I get that these science jargons and climate mumbo-jumbo may confuse many but the onus is on communications, marketing and public relations practitioners (pointing the finger to myself as well) to avoid these confusion. Let alone, our problem of greenwashing (more like rainbow-washing) our impact, we should not take these terms lightly. How we talk about our planet matters people! #sustainability #impactreporting
