While much of the work being done during #COP16 took place around conference tables and presentation stages, it was out among the natural landscapes of Colombia—where the event was hosted—that participants immersed themselves in the significance of this important work first-hand. Hear from NYBG CEO Jennifer Bernstein, alongside Chief Science Officer Mauricio Diazgranados, PhD and representatives of the Nariño Department of Colombia, as they discuss the vast beauty and biodiversity of the territory. As a place where environment and culture intertwine, it represents a microcosm of everything we strive to protect and uplift on our shared planet.

https://lnkd.in/eUQwVNH9 The preoccupation of economic growth driven by overconsumption of both political leaders to stay in power election after election and Business leaders to remain in position with more and more profit growth has given rise to higher and higher materialism, greed, power and waste. And that is the root cause of most of the social, environmental and economic crisis we are facing worldwide. We have had seven decades of Universal Human Rights which are violated where we look today and we have yet to embrace Universal Nature Rights, knowing well that without Nature we put at risk the life supporting capacity of our one Living Earth, thus far know to support life in the Universe. We can continue to preach “Greening the Environment” whilst ignoring the essentially need to the Green the People to live sustainably and responsibly in harmony with one another and especially Nature. It took me personally four decades (1972-2002) working internationally on the challenges of sustainable development to concluded that there can be no sustainable development until we Humans embrace sustainable lifestyles in all aspects of life and living with Humanity. https://lnkd.in/g2rDweqA

This week we bring you an inspiring story of how AI is helping the communities along the Juan Díaz River in Panama City keep their waterways—and our oceans—pollution-free. In the river basin an innovative water wheel system, affectionately named Wanda Díaz, harnesses hydraulic energy and solar power to collect and remove solid waste from the water. Led by Mirei Endara de Heras, the Marea Verde team then utilizes AI-generated data and images to analyze and categorize the waste, providing crucial information for public policies aimed at preventing river and ocean pollution. For Mirei true transformation can only happen from the grassroots, so a key component of her work is actively involving local populations in this effort through programs in schools, and training for local leaders. “It's not enough to tell people not to litter,” she shared with us. “We must give them back their pride in their communities, show them how they can be greener, cleaner and more beautiful. But we must also provide them with access to sustainable alternatives, because if we do not give them options, habits will not change." What action can you take today to make your community a little greener? ☘️ Full story in Newsweek en Español. A big thank you to Nina Sawhney, the John P. and Anne Welsh McNulty Foundation and Freethink for this collaboration. #mareaverde #panamá #activismo #ong #sustainability #gogreen #artificialintelligence #latinos #aiforgood #LatinosEnIA

Every day is Earth's Day (or it should be). That is the main thought I'm having meanwhile I am reading and watching materials from my Business Sustainability Manager Course at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). I'm sharing one video talking about the tremendous harm we are inflicting on the planet and biodiversity with our human actions. By the way, today is International Migratory Bird Day, so it is also a good moment to reflect on this topic, a big challenge of our times. https://lnkd.in/dqt-uUrQ

"Marked every year on 9 August, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is an opportunity to celebrate these communities and their knowledge." zegt Audrey Azoulay, Director-General bij UNESCO. There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. https://buff.ly/2Cu24he #indigenouspeople #unesco #Geoparks #GlobalGeoparksNetwork

🌿 Colombia is hosting COP 16 – the Sixteenth meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity 🌍 Urbanization is a major threat to biodiversity, but sustainable mobility can be part of the solution! 🚴♀️🚍 Cities face several challenges: - Urban development destroys natural habitats. - Lack of green spaces leaves wildlife without refuge. - Pollution (air, water, soil) harms ecosystems. - Invasive species disrupt local biodiversity. - Climate change worsens these pressures. Enhancing urban biodiversity through green spaces, corridors, and sustainable transport can make cities resilient and liveable for both people and nature. 🌱 Find out more: https://loom.ly/GVW_OQU #COP16 #SustainableMobility COP16 Colombia
