RM Williams took a significant turn when a strategic plan was set in motion in the late 1970s during my meeting with the then-majority shareholder, the late John Swaine, at his "tin shed" offices in Percy Street Prospect, Adelaide. Back then, primarily known as a country outfitter, the brand lacked mainstream retail recognition, and Mr Swaine's reaction was, "Barrie City Guys would not buy our handmade boots and merchandise." My response was an offer to underwrite the store's establishment and rebranding costs to a more modern brand, adapting the original RM Williams logo to make it more attractive to mainstream retail. The vision to transition RM Williams into CBD retailing came to life with one of my previous major urban projects, the redevelopment of old G&R Wills offices and warehouses into a high-quality Gallerie Shopping Centre, featuring Australia's first major Food court, the "Gallerie Food Affair." peaking at Christmas week with 60,000 meals, a genuinely staggering success. In the face of scepticism, the belief that City dwellers would embrace RM Williams' handmade boots and merchandise prevailed. This led to the successful establishment of the RM Williams Gallerie Store, surpassing initial projections and captivating patrons way beyond the wildest expectations of my budget projections. It left a very excited John Swaine about mainstream retailing. The subsequent footfall surge marked the brand's arrival into serious city retailing prime entrance into the Gallerie Shopping Centre retail space, 20 Gawler Place Adelaide. This transformative journey continued with the initiation of a consortium I established to secure city blocks in Melbourne's CBD, culminating in the creation of Melbourne Central. RM Williams' presence in the "Shot Tower" which I saved in this space further propelled its expansion nationally and internationally, solidifying its position in the retail landscape. #RMWilliams #RetailTransformation #BusinessExpansion #Innovation #RetailSuccess

M&S’s Polo Some 30 years ago, BDALondon was working with M&S to help develop products that they could no longer make in their supply chain in the UK. At the time, 99% of goods sold in M&S were made in the UK, but they were under price stress from competitors sourcing from the East. Quality and styles had been compromised to hit commercial price points. We landed in Hong Kong (still a British colony) with lots of product ideas around 1990. One of the M&S buyers (or selectors, as they were called) for the leisurewear department (known as T28) was thrilled to have discovered the factory that made the polo shirt for Ralph Lauren, which was the gold standard at the time for quality, style, and fit. M&S developed a very similar polo with the said factory and realized they could hit a retail selling price of circa £5*, compared to RL's £25*. *These price points are what I remember, so don’t quote me, but it gives you an accurate relativity. (Please, anyone in my network, help with more accurate price pointing.) The assumption was this superior quality, fit, and style would offer the M&S customer such great value that sales would grow exponentially. However, what wasn’t factored in was the old dark arts of marketing! As you’ve probably guessed, there was no significant change in sales. The same guys came into the same store and bought the same amount of polos that they’ve always needed. From both brands. The strength of the M&S brand was so strong that customer loyalty drove a perception that M&S quality was always superior to anyone else’s. The strength of Ralph Lauren doesn’t need explaining. #innovation #offshore #sustainabilty #bdalondon #trendhub #marksandspencer #ralphlauren

I can’t recall the last time I’ve seen this much activity in an A mall - 10 new stores and 8 remodels! In a digital world, we can sometimes overlook that ~70% of consumer spending in retail happens in physical stores. Digital still influences these purchases, so I view this era as the convergence of physical & digital to enable exceptional customer experiences. ⭐️ Dallas Northpark Center’s has 10 new stores and 8 remodels booked now through fall. ⭐️ Trending brands - Reformation, Hill House Home , and Marine Layer ⭐️ Luxury new stores or renovations - GIVENCHY, Prada, AMIRI, Etro and Tiffany & Co. #futureofcommerce #futureofretail #retail #malls #luxury #customerexperience

🚨 Bally has been acquired by Regent LP, a global investment firm with a diverse portfolio across retail, luxury, media, technology, and more. With notable investments in brands like DIM, Escada, Club Monaco, and La Senza, Regent LP continues to expand its influence across the globe. This move is another example of US investors taking the reins of iconic European brands, a trend that’s reshaping the landscape of luxury and fashion. In today's interconnected market, it will be interesting to see how Regent's leadership and vision impact Bally's future direction, particularly in balancing its rich European heritage with new global ambitions. 🌍💼 And will it work? In a world where heritage brands must continuously evolve to stay relevant while retaining their identity, Regent's ability to merge strategic growth with cultural preservation will be key. We’ll be watching to see if this partnership thrives in the long term or if the challenges of managing a European luxury brand from a US-based investment firm will prove to be too complex. #BusinessNews #BreakingNews #MergersAndAcquisitions #LuxuryIndustry #FashionBusiness #Investment #GlobalMarket #BrandStrategy #Leadership #Bally #RegentLP #CulturalPreservation #USInvestors #EuropeanBrands #WatchThisSpace https://lnkd.in/e3x9vVi3.
