Another one! 😲 🌟 Exciting News from LTH-Baas! 🌟 LTH-Baas is participating in another Horizon Europe co-funded project EcoShipYard (ESY), which kick-off meeting was held last week in Athens, Greece. As a leader in maritime innovation, LTH-Baas is honored to lead a pivotal work package responsible for the deployment and testing of sustainable and green solutions developed during the project. 🚢 About EcoShipYard (ESY) EcoShipYard is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at equipping EU shipyards and shipowners with advanced tools to assess the non-operational environmental impacts of ships and improve the environmental performance of shipyard processes. In alignment with the EU Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan, this project is poised to drive significant advancements in European shipbuilding sustainability. Key Objectives: 1️⃣ Enhancing environmental performance in shipyards. 2️⃣ Promoting ship materials circularity. 3️⃣ Implementing progressive technologies for sustainable shipyard processes. 4️⃣ Reducing energy use and waste through better management practices. 5️⃣ Enhancing materials' traceability for sustainable sourcing and utilization. Dutch shipyard Feadship has launched what it claims is the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht. Named Project 821, 118.80-meter long superyacht left their Amsterdam shipyard on May 4. Designing and developing Project 821 took five years and is part of Feadship's research into fossil-free fuels for boats. The ship uses hydrogen fuel cells, which generate power through a chemical reaction instead of combustion. While this technology is common in cars, it's a first for superyachts. The owner's deck, inspired by a luxury apartment, features two bedrooms, twin bathrooms and dressing rooms, a gym, two offices, and a living room. The lower deck includes bookshelves around a striking staircase and niches for activities like board games or enjoying coffee. It also houses a library, stateroom, and sea terrace dining room. The interiors use a natural, light color palette with organic materials like leather, marble, and rattan. Project 821 can hold four tons of hydrogen and 16 fuel cells, but this isn't enough for long journeys. When green energy falls short, For longer trips, the 3,200 kW ABB pod drives are powered by MTU generators using HVO, a second-generation bio-fuel that cuts harmful emissions by 90 percent. The boat is currently for sale through Edmiston, a superyacht sale and charter firm. The concept includes a shared operational support system to ensure efficient ferry operations. By the end of the year, Singapore's maritime authorities will roll out approved designs for fully electric harbour craft to streamline their manufacturing. By 2030, all new harbour craft must be electric or use low-carbon fuels. This includes vessels operating within Singapore's waters, such as those ferrying passengers to islands like Pulau Ubin. Experts emphasize the need for expanded charging infrastructure to support the transition to electric vessels. Explore the journey of how the new 180-meter-long, 30-meter-wide dock was constructed and transported to Tallinn between November 2022 and May 2024. At the dock's grand opening, Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Industry, Erkki Keldo, remarked:   “The commissioning of BLRT Grupp's new high-performance floating dock is a clear sign that Estonian industrial companies are committed to investing locally and are confident in the future. This project significantly contributes to the development of new infrastructure and technologies, while also fostering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime industry in Estonia. Tim Berckmoes 🤝 Flanders Hydraulics is a centre of expertise for research and advice on hydraulic, nautical, sediment-related and hydrological topics. The highlight was getting to take control of the helm in the ship maneuvering simulators. With a virtual journey through the Port of Antwerp, we not only learned a lot but also had a great deal of fun. Katrien Eloot Steven Kaptein 🤝 Flanders Make, a research institute specializing in the make industry, is whom we're currently collaborating with on a project concentrating on waterborne electric energy storage. We're working together to gain a clearer understanding of energy consumption and exploring how battery technology can evolve within operational constraints and charging infrastructure. Clear to say we’re enjoying the engineering challenges this presents and are curious to see what will float the electric boat! Hugo Steep 🤝EDR Antwerp Shipyard. The ship repair yard, including its own dry docks, repair shops, and supply warehouse, is a valuable treasure of maritime history. The revaluation of this place is downright impressive and continues to resonate.
