The Meaning of Christmas: Elevating the Ordinary Christmas is more than lights, gifts, and festivities; it’s a profound story of giving meaning to the overlooked and ordinary. The humble town of Bethlehem, as prophesied by Isaiah, exemplifies this truth: “Though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel” (Micah 5:2). A small, seemingly insignificant place becomes the birthplace of the Messiah, reflecting God’s pattern of elevating the ordinary. The stable and manger—the unlikeliest of settings—became symbols of divine purpose. Shepherds, lowly in societal status, were the first to hear the heavenly announcement of Christ's birth. These choices remind us that true worth isn’t in appearances or status but in purpose and transformation. As we celebrate Christmas, let’s reflect on its core lesson: to recognize the value in people and things often overlooked. In our giving, let’s go beyond material gifts and affirm the dignity of those around us. Just as God brought light to Bethlehem, we too can bring light to others through love and compassion. May this season inspire us to elevate the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary meaning of Christmas.
