This time next week (Tuesday 17 September), the ballot will open for voting on a proposed revised Constitution for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. RACS President Associate Professor Kerin Fielding is encouraging members to support the future of the College by voting YES in the upcoming ballot. The new Constitution allows for the establishment of a skills-based governance Board to underpin the future of the College. The Board, to be comprised of a majority of surgeons and chaired by a RACS Fellow, will be complemented by directors with specific skills to collectively undertake fiduciary responsibilities including finance, audit, risk and high-level governance. The core business of RACS will be Council-led. To be adopted, the proposed new Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote in a Fellows’ ballot. Council issued a Notice of Resolution on 16 August, with voting running from 17 September to 18 October. Associate Professor Fielding said College leadership has engaged in an extensive period of consultation with Fellows, specialty societies and other interested parties to ensure that the new Constitution is fit-for-purpose and meets the robust governance needs of a modern and financially stable organisation. “The new Constitution addresses key concerns that were raised, chiefly the paramountcy of the surgical voice in guiding our College. My Council colleagues and I have shared this new version with a broad group of stakeholders, and I’m pleased to say that it has met with wide acceptance." 📝 In a recent piece, Dr. Julie J. Park, Dr. Kelly Rosinger, and Dr. Dominique J. Baker explore how test-optional policies can play a crucial role in expanding access to higher education, especially now, one year after SCOTUS announced its decision curtailing race-conscious admissions. "Test-optional and test-free policies are no [end-all-be-all] to the entrenched inequities that surround higher education admissions, but they remain a tool that may be able to expand access." 🌟 Just attended the insightful "Universities Under Fire" panel discussion. 📢 I highly recommend colleagues and industry peers rewatch the session if possible. Together, we can change the narrative and highlight the invaluable role universities play in our society. 🔍 Key Takeaways: 📍Broader Societal Impact: Universities contribute significantly to society beyond individual education. We must improve public understanding of this value. 📍Changing the Narrative: It's crucial to communicate the societal benefits of universities more effectively and demonstrate operational efficiency and innovation. 📍International Student Policies: Recent rhetoric against international students has been damaging. We need stable policies to maintain the UK’s attractiveness as a destination for international education. 📍Merger Speculation: While there has been speculation about mergers as a solution, the panel was sceptical and some favoured partnerships to address financial challenges. 📍Research Impact: We must better communicate the impactful research universities conduct and its benefits to society. The panel maintained a hopeful outlook, emphasizing the need for collective action and collaboration with the government to stabilize the sector. 🙌Let's continue to push the university sector up the political agenda and find real solutions to the crisis.
Chief Global Affairs Officer, Times Higher Education (THE). Director General, Education World Forum. Creator of the World Academic Summit and convenor of the Global Sustainable Development Congress.
"No other multi-billion-pound sector is treated with such disdain." So said Nick Jennings, vice chancellor of Loughborough University, in a blog on the current status of the UK higher education sector. "The UK’s universities are one of this country’s greatest assets. We’re educators, employers, innovators and pioneers. We shape culture and society. We’re a global sector that’s truly worth celebrating," he wrote. "But increasingly, universities have been under fire. Changes to government policies, real-terms cuts to funding and an ongoing cost-of-living crisis have seen the media and politicians questioning almost everything we do, from the value of our degrees to the significance of our research." Today, scores of universities are making staff cuts amid a crisis of funding and some universities face the very real prospect of going bust. With a new UK government in place and a void in higher education policy, it is time to change the narrative and unite to push the university sector up the political agenda and to find real solutions to the crisis. I'm delighted to be chairing a fantastic expert vice chancellors' panel to explore the way forward with Nick, as well as Vivienne Stern, ceo of Universities UK, Lisa Roberts, vice chancellor of University of Exeter and Nishan Canagarajah, vice chancellor of University of Leicester.
