Could this be the first step towards creating a more resilient community? Working alongside the Harrogate Civic Society we want to create a new vision for Harrogate with more input from local people. Through creating a neighbourhood plan, local residents can have more influence in what their communities can look like, and Tuesday's event showed us there's a huge amount of interest in getting the process started: "A show of hands at the end revealed overwhelming support to progress the idea, which means a forum will be created to take matters forward." https://lnkd.in/efSbqq-c The forum will consult with people in Harrogate to find out what issues matter most to them and if successful, we can move onto the next stage.

Renting is an issue which is very divisive in many communities. Are renters disconnected from the community? Do they really care less about their neighbors and the property? How much renting is too much and what can associations do to maintain a reasonable balance? The growing YIMBY ("Yes In My Backyard") movement is making waves in the political sphere — and that’s good news for affordable housing. From local neighborhoods to Capitol Hill, YIMBY advocates are securing key roles for pro-housing voices. In Washington, D.C., 66 of 79 YIMBY-endorsed candidates were elected to local advisory commissions, giving housing advocates a stronger voice in community decisions. This growing political influence is driving tangible change, making affordable housing more accessible for families nationwide. In Abt Global's latest report, we took a look at how 10 community-based collaboratives are addressing their communities’ diverse economic needs by investing in housing. For example, in South Florida, one collaborative is working with two land trusts to build or preserve at least 300 rental units using the Community Land Trust (CLT) model, which ensures housing prices remain affordable. Imagine a London where every resident has the power to control the management of their homes, citizens co-design new developments, and steward land in a way that fosters sustainable communities and generates a just transition towards genuine community wealth. This isn’t just an idealistic vision; it’s a practical, achievable strategy that can reshape the future of housing in our city—one where community-led projects play a vital role. For too long, London’s housing policy has been dominated by the belief that large-scale developments are the only solution to our housing crisis. These projects, often championed by big housing providers and public officials, are touted as quick, economical, and efficient. However the gap between the rhetoric and reality remains cavernous. There is a better way. Community-led housing offers a powerful alternative that empowers residents to take control of their living environments. This approach allows Londoners to be directly involved in the planning and development of housing schemes, particularly on small sites or in areas undergoing significant regeneration. It fosters innovation and enables the creation of diverse, sustainable communities that truly reflect the needs and aspirations of those who live there. Community-led housing models prioritise the long-term stewardship of land and homes, ensuring that affordability is protected in perpetuity - crucial in a city where housing costs continue to soar, threatening to price out long-term residents and undermine the social fabric of our neighbourhoods. This approach is not just about building homes; it’s about building communities. It’s about creating places where people want to live, not just because they have to, but because they’ve had a hand in shaping them. Community-led housing is more than a housing solution; it’s a social revolution. It represents a shift in power from developers and officials to the residents themselves. By enabling Londoners to design and manage their own homes, we are fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility that can lead to stronger, more resilient communities. Community-led projects lead to better outcomes in terms of sustainability and quality of life. When residents are involved in the planning process, they are more likely to prioritise features that contribute to long-term sustainability, such as energy-efficient designs, green spaces, and communal areas. They make sense. In a time when housing affordability is one of the most pressing issues facing London, community-led housing provides a pathway to long-term affordability. Well done Tom and all at Community Land Trust Network on the submission to The London Assembly. Good to see Leonie Cooper AM participation in this. Closer to home we hope Wandsworth Borough Council will work with our new Earlsfield Community Land Trust to act of these recommendations. Wee blog on our local CLT launch in July. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e9wZ7pAt
We've published the Community Land Trust Network submission to The London Assembly housing committee. We set out a vision in which all Londoners have the option to control the management of their homes; to codesign schemes for small sites and significant regeneration; to make different and sometimes innovative choices about the kinds of homes and communities that are built; to steward land and homes so they can achieve development without displacement. We then show how this could escape its niche to achieve significant scale, and make recommendations for the GLA, boroughs and government to achieve it. https://lnkd.in/ebpySyC4 Oliver Bulleid, Anurag Verma, Sem Lee, Sanya Polescuk, Michelle Huggins, Juliet Can, Rupesh Varsani, Brendan Conway, Levent Kerimol

Well done short video on Affordable Housing. Raises the question, can we start the intermingling of housing types from, let's say the bench and then move into the valley in SLC?
We made a housing video based on our project for the Utah Division of Housing and Community Development! Check out Jason Brown on the narration.
How do we make housing affordable?

Over the coming weeks, Fiona Dunkin, Housing Policy Manager at Clúid, will be discussing Housing Policy in Ireland in a series of short videos. In the first of the series, Fiona highlights the importance of Approved Housing Bodies, provides a brief introduction to how Clúid operates in the sector, and discusses how AHBs contribute to 'Housing for All' targets. Watch now at https://lnkd.in/eRp3tGGZ In line with the theme of this year's #InternationalWomensDay, #InvestInWomen, #AccelerateProgress, we asked Fiona to tell us about her experience as part of the team at Clúid, working at the forefront and leading in the development of Irish Housing Policy. Fiona tells us 'I’ve been working in Clúid since 2019 in the area of policy. I love my job – it’s so varied and interesting and there’s a lot of opportunity to look to shape and influence how we do things from a policy perspective in Clúid and within housing policy more generally in Ireland. Clúid feels like quite a pro-gender equality workplace, with plenty of experienced female leaders. 'For me, the most important thing about Clúid is its social mission. I think this does really shine through in all of our activities – my view is that we need to hold on to this and keep it at the centre of everything we do, as the organisation grows. Personally, I have been really proud to be involved in the development of Cost Rental policy in Ireland over the last number of years – providing a brand new non-market tenure in Ireland for those who can’t access social housing but who are experiencing difficulties in the private market. I think this represented a major step in Irish housing policy in broadening our concept of non-market housing and cementing the idea that everyone needs an affordable home in order to live fulfilled and productive lives. Women and children are often at the sharp edge of societal challenges including housing and therefore I think that any positive changes in this regard will benefit women, perhaps more than others. 'I was also delighted to lead the development of the 2022 Simon Brooke Lecture, which focused on domestic violence and social housing – with domestic violence most often being experienced by women. We need to hear and listen to the experiences of women in social and affordable housing, and we need to continue to learn and improve how we do things in this regard so that women are enabled to focus on their lives and their future. 'Happy International Women’s Day!' #Clúid #LeadingTheWayHome #approvedhousingbody #housingpolicy #costrental #shapingthefuture #housingforall #iwd2024womenleadingtheway #iwd24
