ONE QUESTION I GET A LOT! Why Study French When You're a Francophone? I often get asked why as a Francophone, i.e a French speaker would I bother studying the language and sitting for exams like the DALF. It's a great question! While we might have a natural fluency, formal French education offers so much more than just grammar drills. It's about: * Mastering the nuances: Delving deeper into the intricacies of our language, from regional dialects to literary styles. * Opening doors: DALF certifications are highly valued, especially in academic and professional settings. * Enhancing communication: Improving writing, speaking, and listening skills for better expression. * Cultural enrichment: Exploring the rich tapestry of French culture and history through literature and philosophy. * Personal growth: Challenging ourselves intellectually and achieving personal milestones. DIARY OF MY FRENCH ADVENTURE -DAY ONE During my junior secondary school days, we were taught French, and I was one of the top performers in the class. I loved it and always looked forward to the lessons. However, I had to transfer to a new school, and unfortunately, they didn't have a French teacher. As a result, I lost touch with the language and moved on. Some time later, I decided to learn French online, but I struggled with consistency and started and stopped learning multiple times. If I had been consistent, I would have made significant progress by now. This is why I'm sharing my story; I've decided to start learning French again from scratch, and this time, I'm determined to get it right. I'll be sharing my progress with you and keeping a record of my journey. Here's what I learned on Day One: - French is the 5th most spoken language in the world, with over 320 million speakers and 220 million native speakers. - It's an official language in 74 countries, and around 51 million people are currently learning French. - I also learned common greetings in French and the French alphabet. Fluency is like a muscle. I tell my students this all the time. You don’t get fluent by memorising vocabulary lists or perfecting every grammar rule. (Sadly, that’s the downfall of most mainstream education English classes, at least here in Spain.) You get fluent by using your English—messily, imperfectly, but consistently. Like any muscle, it grows stronger the more you use it. I’ve seen this with so many students—one who thought she’d never get through a meeting in English is now handling them confidently, all because she stopped striving for perfection and started using her English every day. In my years of teaching, I’ve helped people go from feeling “stuck” to having natural, confident conversations. The key? By practising strategies that mirror real-life communication and tackling the mental blocks and obstacles that prevent fluency. How are you working on your English fluency muscle?
