Today, we’re celebrating America Recycles Day—a moment to raise awareness about the importance of recycling in reducing waste and conserving valuable resources.
At The RealReal, we believe that a sustainable future for fashion begins with us. Our mission is to reduce the environmental impact of luxury goods by promoting the reuse and recirculation of luxury items. It starts with reducing what we consume, reusing what we can, and recycling what we can't. In fact, 95% of discarded clothing can be re-worn, recycled, or reused—making reuse the most sustainable option!

Celebrating America Recycles Day with The RealReal’s commitment to sustainability is a great reminder of how reuse and recycling can make a huge impact on fashion’s environmental footprint.
With a strong focus on sustainability in fashion and waste management, the aim is to address the environmental challenges posed by textile waste, a growing concern within the fashion industry. The industry significantly contributes to global pollution, with a large portion of discarded textiles ending up in landfills. By promoting sustainable practices such as textile recycling, circular fashion, and waste reduction, efforts are concentrated on encouraging more responsible production and consumption. Emphasis is placed on reuse, upcycling, and resource-efficient processes to support a fashion industry that minimizes waste and conserves natural resources. Through collaboration with professionals and organizations, the goal is to drive impactful change and contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future for fashion. Dame Vivienne Westwood emphasized the need for reducing consumption and promoting sustainable practices. One of her famous statements on waste was:
"The most important thing is to stop buying so many clothes. Buy less, choose well, make it last."
Just came across that while reading and thought I could share.
As an industry, we talk about the need to transition away from the current linear system towards a circular model that minimizes waste and maximizes resource use by keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible.
This involves designing clothes to last longer, recycling materials to create new garments, and prioritizing repair and reuse over disposal.
But as the fashion industry embraces this circular vision, what does this new system look like, and WHO gets to define it? Who’s at the table when we think about fashion’s circular future, and who’s not? 👀
Historically, discussions on circularity have been dominated by voices from the Global North, especially Western countries. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that the fashion industry’s impacts are global. Therefore, the perspectives and experiences of those in the Global South, where much of the production occurs and the waste ends up, must also be central to the conversation. 💯
During the Sustainable Fashion Forum conference last year, Nicole Bassett, co-founder of The Renewal Workshop and Circularity Lead at Bleckmann, emphasized the need to reimagine the concept of circularity in a way that doesn’t perpetuate harmful legacies or exclude marginalized voices.
Fashion’s approach to circularity needs to be inclusive. True progress toward sustainability and equity can only be achieved by confronting and dismantling systemic injustices.
We’re gearing up for another epic conference (April 17-19th in Austin, Texas), and this year, we have the honor of discussing a holistic global approach to circularity with Charles Oyamo, Sandra Gonza, Yayra Agbofah led by Cascale's Kaley Roshitsh!
Join us in ATX for three days packed with nuanced conversation, community, collaboration, and everything you’ve come to know and love from the Sustainable Fashion Forum IRL! 🤠

It was an honor to attend The Explorers Club's Climate Week event, “Moving Beyond Fashion's Waste to Protect Nature,” with Isabella Hershey. Listening to Samina Virk, Arshiya Lal, and Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts discuss the future of sustainability across the fashion value chain was incredibly engaging and inspiring.
With production levels still on the rise, it’s easy to think that sustainable fashion is an oxymoron. However, the insights shared on this panel started to give me a bit of hope.
Now, more than ever, leaders need to have open conversations about what real change looks like. Utilizing sustainable and ethically sourced raw materials, reducing production, and providing greater transparency to consumers are essential steps forward.
These discussions are just the beginning, and I look forward to seeing how the industry moves forward from here…
Exploring the Future of Sustainable Fashion: The Fashion industry is one of the most polluting and most natural resources consuming industry. It faces ecological and social challenges as well as regulatory constraints.
Some of key opportunities for transformation to become more sustainable:
💡 Rethinking Supply Chains: Implementing more resilient and shorter supply chains.
🐝 Natural Capital Integration: Considering biodiversity impacts to minimize ecological footprints.
🤝 Collaborative Value Chain Initiatives: Engaging the full supplier ecosystem, integrating sustainability principles into operations, and collaborating with customers to refine product specifications for more sustainable criteria.
🚚 Sustainable Logistics and Transport: Implementing green logistics and transport practices to achieve significant CO2 emission reductions and surface savings.
♻ Circular and Regenerative Business Models: Embracing circular and regenerative practices to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient industry.
Let's work together to address the full scale of sustainable transformation and drive impactful change.

🌿 Thinking Earthly 🌿
“Thinking earthly” means considering the environmental impact of every fashion choice we make. From sourcing materials to production processes and end-of-life disposal, every step matters. By prioritizing eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, hemp, and recycled fabrics, we reduce our carbon footprint and preserve natural resources.
Moreover, adopting ethical production practices ensures fair treatment of workers and supports local communities. Embracing circular design principles promotes reuse, recycling, and upcycling, prolonging the lifespan of garments and minimizing waste.
Together, let’s shift towards a fashion industry that honors our planet and sustains future generations.

Recently, I discovered an incredible organization called Fashion Force for Fossil-Free (F4F) that believes we have the power to transform the fashion world. This ambitious group strives to revolutionize the industry by eliminating its reliance on fossil fuels.
Here's how F4F says we can all join in and make a difference:
1. Advocacy for legislative changes: Engaging our lawmakers to create policies that limit fossil fuel usage in fashion
2. Conscious consumption: Choosing products that use less fossil fuel in their materials and production processes.
3. Aligning our actions with scientific climate goals: Being aware of our fashion choices' implications on the environment and actively working towards climate targets
This is about more than just trends - creating sustainable, circular economies within the fashion industry.
And it starts with us.
Together, we can sow the seeds of change that will bloom into a future of green glamour.
This is our runway to a greener tomorrow.
It's well worth taking a look 👇

🌿 The Green Thread in Fashion’s Fabric 🌍✨
Fashion’s future is green, and it starts with the very fabric of our clothes. While conventional materials leave a heavy footprint on our planet, eco-friendly alternatives pave the way for a more sustainable and ethical industry.
Conventional vs. Eco-Friendly: Traditional fabrics often come with environmental baggage – water pollution, harmful chemicals, and a high carbon footprint. Eco-friendly materials, however, promise reduced environmental impact, conservation of resources, and support for ethical labor practices.
Why It Matters: Choosing eco-friendly materials isn’t just about the fabric; it’s about supporting a cycle of sustainability that benefits the planet, from water conservation to reducing landfill waste.
Let’s embrace materials that love our planet as much as we do. From organic cotton and hemp to recycled polyester and Tencel, every choice towards sustainability is a step towards a better world.
