🌟 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐄𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐨 🌟 This vacation, I had the privilege of engaging in a research internship with the Neurology Department at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) under Prof. Patrick Adjei. As a 4th-year medical student at UGMS, this was my first hands-on experience in medical research, and it was both enlightening and inspiring. Our study analyzed EEG Abnormality Patterns in over 1,000 patients referred for Electroencephalography (EEG) at KBTH. This research highlighted EEG’s critical role in detecting seizure disorders and other conditions like sudden collapse and loss of consciousness. From problem statements to data analysis, this journey has deepened my appreciation for research’s role in advancing patient care. For anyone interested in research, dive in and you’ll learn so much and make an impact! 🧠 New Discovery: Brain Region Linked to Numerical Thinking! 🧠 Exciting research has revealed that our ability to understand and process numbers may originate in a much older part of the brain than previously thought. While studying brain activity in epilepsy patients, researchers found significant activity in the putamen, a brain area typically associated with basic functions like movement, rather than numerical thinking. 🔍 Key Findings: - Unexpected Brain Activity: The putamen, an ancient brain structure, showed significant activity when participants thought about numbers. - Evolutionary Insight: This suggests that our capacity for numerical cognition may have evolved much earlier than previously believed, deeply ingrained in our neural circuitry. - Implications for Neurosurgery: Identifying specific brain regions involved in numerical cognition can help surgeons avoid damaging these crucial areas during procedures, particularly in surgeries to remove tumors or treat epilepsy. 🌟 Why It Matters: This discovery not only challenges traditional understanding of where number processing occurs in the brain but also offers new hope for individuals struggling with math. By understanding the neural mechanisms underlying numerical cognition, educators and therapists can develop targeted interventions to improve learning and overcome math difficulties. Let's celebrate this groundbreaking research and its potential to enhance both medical practices and educational strategies! 🌱 #Neuroscience #BrainHealth #NumericalCognition #MedicalResearch #Education #Innovation #MedicalLaboratoryTechnology #Microbiology #Phlebotomy #LaboratoryTesting #DiagnosticTesting #HealthcareProfessional #MedicalTesting #ClinicalLaboratory #BiomedicalScience #HealthcareIndustry #MedicalScience #LaboratorMedicine #ClinicalMicrobiology #InfectionControl #PhlebotomyTechnician #MedicalLabTechnician #MicrobiologyLab #ClinicalLab #HealthcareCareer #MedicalCareer #ScienceCareer #COVID19Testing #Virology #Bacteriology #Parasitology #MolecularDiagnosis #GeneticTesting #Cytology #Histopathology #Immunology #Serology

🌟From Learning to Publishing🌟 Two months ago, I had the privilege of conducting an intensive (Meta-Analysis Workshop) for a group of incredibly motivated students. The course wasn't just about theory—it was designed to take participants on a transformative journey, from mastering the basics to applying their skills in real-world research projects. 📚💡 What started as a classroom lesson quickly evolved into actionable knowledge. Together, we embarked on research projects, translating their newfound skills into impactful academic work. 🎉 Today, I’m thrilled to share that one of these projects, titled "Risk of Stroke in Patients with Congenital Heart Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis," has been accepted for publication in the prestigious journal BMC Neurology! 🧠 This achievement is a testament to the power of applied learning and the dedication of these future leaders in research. It’s moments like these that reaffirm the value of fostering curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on experience in academic training. 🌍 Let this be an inspiration for all aspiring researchers: knowledge is powerful when paired with action. And the journey from learning to publishing is one worth celebrating. Congratulations to all the students involved—this is just the beginning of your incredible academic careers! 🎓✨ #Research #Neurology #Stroke #Meta-Analysis #Course #Congenital #Pediatric #Journal #BMC #Workshop
