What an incredible journey it has been! Transitioning from a role in a multinational corporation to embracing the challenges of leaving my job, city, and home country to pursue further education has been one of the most transformative and rewarding experiences of my career. During MOHR Retail’s recent webinar, I dove into this topic with our panelists. Take a look at some of the takeaways below: ▶ Lisa Anderson (She/Her/Hers), Division Vice President of Optometry at EyeCare Partners, shared that when it comes to individual career-pathing and growth plans, they use a variety of training formats, including microburst training to hands-on experience and focus time with a mentor. This approach has proven valuable from a retention standpoint and in helping drive more internal promotions. ▶ Mike Van Lente, Executive Leader of Learning & Development at Whole Foods Market, noted that they offer a development program to prepare high-potential team members for each leadership role in a store, from associate team leader (assistant manager) all the way to store team leader (general manager). ▶ Career-pathing isn’t just about moving into leadership, though, as Van Lente pointed out. The #selfdevelopment and learning continues! Today marked the beginning of my continued study with The University of Manchester and the Alliance Manchester Business School, embarking on my MSc in #ManagementPractice. I decided to take the option for the MSC top up, after achieving my PGDip and Level 7 Leadership apprenticeship at the beginning of the year. I cannot thank Lee Moody FCIPD enough for pushing me to do this, and his favourite tag line #LeadersAreReaders still chimes in my head. I never went to University when I was younger, instead opting to dive straight into work, and to be honest, while I've never looked back on this decision, I've always felt the need to underpin my experience with some academia. This has been even more prevalent as my job search over the last few months, with the amount of roles needing degree level educated applicants. Back in 2020, realising that I couldn't be considered for an area manager role for Aldi UK without a degree. I needed to do something. Before starting my apprenticeship in 2021, there was one line that kicked me into action: "You can start this course, along side your working life, and in 2 years time have a qualification. Alternatively, you carry on as you are, for the next 2 years, and have nothing to show for it". Honestly, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you're reading this, and thinking 'I want more', then speak to your L&D team, line manager, HR team, google what course you want to do. Find a provider. If you're in a big business, you'll probably have a fully funded scheme, but whatever you do, START THE PROCESS, or in 6 months, 12 months, 2 years, you'll still be sat in the same position.
