23 years. For those of us old enough to remember, that day - 9/11/2001 - will be forever etched into the annals of our minds' eyes. For those of us who aren’t…youth who have been old enough to serve in our military for several years now, even…9/11 can appear like just another paragraph in history books. That’s why storytelling is so VERY important. When we tell our stories, we peel the black and white facts off the page and infuse those experiences with emotion and color. When we tell our stories, we are able to pull up a chair for someone who “doesn’t get it,” who has been separated from that experience or event by time or circumstance and close the gap of true understanding. When you watch this tribute to “The heroes of the forgotten maritime rescue mission” of 9/11, you hear…and experience for yourselves…the stories of these brave souls who were there, navigating the terror-filled Manhattan waters through smoke and debris in order to ferry as many lives as possible out of a crumbling city skyline. https://lnkd.in/eQ8353sN Theirs are by no means the only portraits of heroism from that day, and we honor both the told and untold stories of this tragedy of our nation. We mourn the lost and those who continue to be devastated or afflicted by the effects of the events on and connected with September 11th. But we hope that these captains' experiences - shared as their own stories, in their voices - help eliminate any distance these 23 years have created and, instead, allow you to pull up a chair and sit beside these heroic mariners and all of your fellow citizens as you share in the storytelling of our people.🕯️🇺🇸 🔵For stories of the “call to service” impact 9/11 had, you can read this USO article, “Why 9/11 Inspired These Service Members to Join the Military,” at: https://lnkd.in/ebPUbPZ2 #September11th #PatriotDay #NationalDayofServiceandRemembrance #NeverForget

On June 6, 1944, thousands of men stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II. By nightfall, about 175,000 Allied troops and 50,000 vehicles were ashore with nearly a million more men on the way that summer. The Normandy invasion was one of the great turning points of 20th-century history. An immense army was placed in Nazi-occupied Europe, never to be dislodged. Unfortunately, with war comes casualties. Approximately 135,000, including 29,000 killed and 106,000 were wounded or missing. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944, as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half-mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,386 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. Today, we remember and memorialize those who gave their lives 79 years ago on those beaches and never got the chance to return home to their families and loved ones. Here’s a good way you can help.
In Valdosta, Georgia, where the winds of Helene sent towering pine trees crashing into homes and lawns, our army of volunteers is bringing hope In Jesus' Name. If you would like to be boots on the ground in Helene's path we encourage you to consider serving with our Valdosta team! We praise God that he has provided an abundance of incredible volunteers at our western N.C. response sites.
