🇺🇦 Ukraine: as the EU opens accession talks with the country, we share Reporters sans frontières (RSF)'s recommendations to ensure independent journalism and the right to reliable information. The organization, which spearheaded the launch of the Partnership for Information and Democracy in 2019, calls on the authorities to join and implement the principles of this intergovernmental agreement already endorsed by 52 countries around the world. At the Forum, we stand ready to support the country in its efforts to ensure press freedom and sustainability as well as implementing democratic safeguards in the information and communication space. This could notably be achieved through the implementation of our different policy frameworks. Joining the Partnership, Ukraine would also benefit from a platform for international cooperation to address the harms of the information chaos and ensure information integrity. More bullsh*t reporting from The Washington Post concerning the fighting in Gaza and southern Lebanon? Read "Israeli forces kill 3 journalists in Lebanon, raid hospital in north Gaza" by Adam Taylor, Mohamad El Chamaa, Louisa Loveluck and Andrew Jeong (https://lnkd.in/dWyW-FxG). Excuse me, Adam, Mohamad, Louisa and Andrew, why does your headline not read "Israeli forces kill 3 Hezbollah-affiliated journalists [as acknowledged in the text of your article] in southern Lebanon war zone"? Why does your subtitle not state that Hezbollah is recognized as a global terrorist organization by, inter alia, the US, the UK, the Arab League, Canada and Germany, instead of quoting the biased pronouncement of an official from the Israel-hating UN? And why do you not mention the dual associations of "journalists" in Gaza, i.e. Al Jazeeera and Hamas (https://lnkd.in/dujdKeek)? The article goes on to say, "Israel invaded Lebanon on Oct. 1 [2024] and is engaged in heavy fighting with Hezbollah militants in the south." Of course, no mention of the fact that Hezbollah attacked Israel without provocation on Oct. 8, 2023, i.e. one day after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, engulfing Lebanon in this conflict. As regards the fighting around the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza also "reported" by this article, no mention of how Hamas has made use of hospitals in Gaza as command centers and to shield its gunmen throughout the war (see https://lnkd.in/dRmtj5qk). Now have a look at the picture in the article titled "A Palestinian man carries an injured child into the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza after the Israeli bombardment of the town of Beit Lahia on Wednesday". Questions: Who holds a child, especially an injured child, in this fashion? How is it possible that this child with a "wounded" arm wrapped in thin gauze is extending this limb upward? And why is there not a drop of blood on this child's "wounded" arm or anywhere else on his body? Even more disturbing, there is no discussion of the Israeli hostages still being held by Hamas in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023. Were Hamas to free these hostages, this war would end tomorrow. The Washington Post knows no shame. Disgraceful. Disgusting.

🇦🇫 As we mark three years since the Taliban's return to power in #Afghanistan, the situation for press freedom and civic space continues to deteriorate. The Taliban’s restrictive directives have created a worrying environment where journalists face extreme risks and severe constraints. A recent report by the IFEX member Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) underscores this grim reality, documenting 181 press freedom violations over the past year alone, including 48 arrests and multiple media closures. Today, we stand in solidarity with Afghan journalists and civil society. It’s imperative that the international community steps up to protect the right to free expression and hold accountable those responsible for these violations. 👉 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ge-3ih_s

The latest developments in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict have led to significant shifts in media coverage by both local and international journalists. Following the unexpected destruction of thousands of communication devices in Lebanon and Syria, and the subsequent assassination of Hezbollah’s military command in Beirut, #Hezbollah has attempted to curb uncensored reporting. Camera crews were forbidden from filming in sensitive locations, including hospitals, while videos continue to surface rapidly on #Telegram and #Twitter. In #Israel, mainstream media has been cautious, repeatedly emphasizing that Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attacks. Meanwhile, social media platforms are buzzing, with many Israelis expressing pride and excitement over the operations’ success. Does this mean mainstream media is becoming obsolete? Not at all. Professional journalists on the ground and their editorial teams remain essential, providing verified and coherent information to the public. While social media may be faster, the platforms lack the mechanisms to properly verify the credibility of reports and sources. It is even more crucial at this time, with both Israel and Hezbollah experienced in manipulating the media for their interests

The three “p’s”: in the last few days, the international press has spoken of how Israel has “pounded”, “pummeled” and now “pressured” Lebanon. Please! This after almost one full year of Lebanon firing daily across the bow at Israel, Yet nowhere does the “r” word for-for “retaliate” appear. Somehow, the rational for Israel’s conduct remains a mystery to the press-it’s as if they awoke one morning and decided to “attack” Lebanon. Quite similar to how they awoke on October 8, 2024 and “attacked” Gaza. Only, Israel didn’t ”attack” either country. In both cases, theirs was a response to an incursion, not an attack. Nor did they seek to assault Lebanon or Gaza. Their targets have always been Hezbollah and Hamas. But both terrorist organizations have a penchant for inserting their own presence and their arsenal in schools, houses of prayers and homes, knowing that it’s a two edged sword for Israel to attack such targets- while they may achieve their objective, they continually do so at the stake of losing the PR war, with the help of some unscrupulous journalists. So, back to the “p”’s. How about adding “perpetuate”? Why does the press continue to perpetuate this fiction?
