One of my great gratitudes was working in non-profits, which does not take away from academia (also a version of non-profits), or for profit corporations, small business ownership or private business, or government… etc… The concepts of events and campaigns and how they relate to larger wholes and systems and sectors and communities… it is very informative… trust and rights matter… When I think about health systems and Value and fee for service relationships and humans and systems. What’s the role of an association’s sponsorship staff person? I received an interesting response to my recent post suggesting that when associations are considering changes to their annual conference, they should get input from conference sponsors and year-long corporate partners. An association executive messaged me, “We are working on a robust conference survey, and I didn’t consider asking our partners. That would have been a huge mistake since they are one of our largest (most valuable) stakeholders.” That’s why I recommend that the person on an association’s staff who has responsibility for sponsorships and corporate partnership has a seat at the senior staff or executive staff table. By being present, they can listen as programs and issues are discussed that could impact sponsors and partners. Engage your corporate and business community by starting sponsorship conversations early and focusing on partnerships rather than standard sponsorship packages. Tailor sponsorship opportunities to align with the goals and interests of potential sponsors, offering them customized packages that provide value. Highlight the benefits of sponsorship, such as brand visibility, community goodwill, and networking opportunities. Maintain open communication with sponsors throughout the planning process and ensure they receive recognition during and after the event. Strong sponsor relationships can lead to long-term partnerships and increased support for future events. Part of my responsibility in enhancing the corporate sponsorship program of an association involved compiling a comprehensive list of competitors. My intent was to create one “Competitive Analysis” PowerPoint slide with information I gleaned from my research. The list grew to two slides; the list continued to expand so I decreased the font size. The final compilation included a 75 entries, a testament to the breadth and diversity of competitors vying for the attention of both the association's members and potential sponsors. We addressed ways to mitigate the impact of competition on associations during the recent webinar “How the Competitive Landscape has Changed for Associations and What to Do About It”. The best way to get sponsors in 2024 Read this if you have been: 1. Trying for a long time to get sponsors but nothing really works 2. In charge of getting sponsorship and need to make it happen otherwise you’ll have to give up on your dream Sponsorship seekers in our program are attracting closing sponsors pretty much every day. Because they know the truth: Sponsors aren’t charities or donors. They are marketers. And as marketers they want to get in front of the right audiences. Because getting in front of the right audiences means more engagement and more sales. That’s what they’re after. Which means they are very interested in your audience. Not your message.
