Don't write a story where the protagonist changes at the end. Write a story where the protagonist changes throughout, and that change is what allows a satisfying end. This is how I define story It gives me a criterion for deciding what goes into and stays out of a screenplay. Realizing this and learning to define the story I want to tell upfront changed my screenwriting. It's how I write and what I teach. -------------- Interested in #screenwriting? The three most fundamental elements of narrative drama. 1. ) Someone wants something. 2.) They're having trouble getting it. 3.) Something will happen if they fail. If you can't identify all three in your screenwriting, you did something wrong. Rework whatever you're doing until you can. -------------- Interested in #screenwriting? Happy Ides of March! (To everyone but you, Julius) Also conveniently a reminder that we are almost a quarter into the year. 😅 If you’re doing the 12-week year, it’s a great time to harness that fresh Spring energy and assess what worked and what didn’t in your process so far and to set intentions for the next three months. 💪 #goalsetting #creativeideas #12weekyear #screenwriting

Your voice is not about how cutesy you can be in the action lines of your screenwriting. It's about making unique and specific choices and the confidence and clarity by which you express them. POV + specificity + clarity = voice. Focus on that, and your voice will emerge. #screenwriting

When writing on spec, write for the reader's experience. That's your audience. Don't take their attention for granted. Until you get to production, the reader's experience is all you have for your screenwriting. Nurture it like it's your currency. Because it is. -------------- Interested in #screenwriting? If you do this thing, "they will know you're an amateur" seems to be the scary threat of so much dogmatic screenwriting advice. Trust me: the reader knows where they got the script they're reading. They know if you‘re an amateur or not. That is not something you need to stress out over. All the reader wants is clarity of your intent and to feel something. They don’t want to be confused. They don’t want to bored. They just want a good script. #screenwriting

One of the many benefits of gaining confidence with your screenwriting is that you stop making it more complicated than it needs to be. It isn't easy. It's definitely a challenge. But it's not complicated. Get out of your own way. Tell the story. One moment at a time. If you make choices for each moment in your story succinctly and clearly, you're ahead of 99% of screenwriters out there, including pros. #screenwriting
