Interesting and welcomed developments for the tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors in South Africa. “South Africa is considered a top tourist destination due to its distinctive combination of contemporary infrastructure, cultural history, and biodiversity. Building on these elements, the Tourism Paper provides encouragement for focused expenditure relating to infrastructure development, marketing, and increased safeguards for tourists. With an emphasis on important markets in Europe and North America, these efforts aim to attract an increasing number of foreign tourists to South Africa.”

Last week I attended the Sustainable Tourism Africa Summit and gained several key insights. 1. Sustainable tourism considers all stakeholders and asks critical questions such as whether the community is ready for tourism and how it can be beneficial to them. It's important to note that people cannot conserve what they don't value, and they won't value tourism unless it benefits them. 2. Sustainable tourism should, therefore, promote the environment and empower communities. 3. It should also explore how to engage in activities beyond sightseeing, how to value and preserve indigenous knowledge, and how to involve youth in these efforts. One particularly impactful idea was the importance of intentionally selling tours that promote happiness and consciousness. This approach ensures that tourism not only provides economic benefits but also enhances the well-being of both visitors and local communities. #stas2024 #SustainableTourism #ResponsibleTourism

| News | 🧐 In the framework of the launch of the Travel and Tourism Development Index in partnership with the World Economic Forum, UN Tourism Secretary-General calls for a people-centered approach of tourism 🫂 🗨️ "As we move forward, I renew my call to ensure that communities be put at the center of tourism development everywhere. We have a responsibility to make tourism jobs valued and decent jobs and that we make tourism an opportunity for a better future for everyone, women and global youth especially." ❗As international tourism is almost reaching 100% of the pre-pandemic level, it is crucial that each individual affected by or involved whether directly or indirectly in the tourism industry is considered.
