In 2022, large commercial trucks (single unit and combination trucks) traveled more than 320 billion vehicle miles (VMT), which is a little more than 10% of all VMT, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Approximately 13% of all roadway fatalities that occurred in 2021 involved a commercial truck. In general, human-related factors are the most common causes of truck accidents. The U.S. DOT is set to propose a federal safety standard aimed at curbing excessive speeds in the trucking industry. This measure will ensure drivers and motorists benefit from reduced road risks. "Stopping a tractor-trailer at 75 mph takes a considerably longer distance than stopping at 60 mph. Speed limiters that cap a large truck’s maximum speed are a proven safety technology. Almost all trucking fleets utilize them. But other segments condemn them. Legislation in Congress (The DRIVE Act) would, if passed, continue to endanger other motorists, by allowing 80,000-pound tractor-trailers to operate at 75 or 80 mph, or even higher.
