𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒗𝒖𝒍𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅? A new report, a collaboration between Global Student Living and CUBO College and University Business Officers seeks to understand the experiences of students with a disability, who are neurodivergent, from an ethnic minority and who identify as LGBTQIA+ Standout insights include: ◾ Students with a disability and those who are neurodivergent have a more negative welcome experience with online inductions requiring room for improvement. ◾ Similar to reports produced by Unite Students and Jenny Shaw - anxiety can be caused due to late or no notification of maintenance visits and works. In the words of Tim D. at the summer conference "Lifts are one of the biggest causes of stress". ◾ Room allocation practices provide a lack of choice and many vulnerable students are left feeling isolated and lonely. ◾ For those who are neurodivergent or who have a disability, personal, academic and financial wellbeing are all negatively affected with students reporting struggles with study skills and having enough money to get by. The recommendations are detailed and focus on many areas including; placing a high priority on creating more tolerant, diverse communities, conducting accessibility audits on marketing and comms materials and co-creating with students to understand what they need. However, the first recommendation, a suggestion to appoint a senior leader with responsibility to drive accommodation improvements for all vulnerable groups is one which caught my attention. We can agree that senior leadership buy in and associated strategies are essential to ensuring progress but I'd argue a step more is required, particularly in private PBSA. Ensuring student success and satisfaction within accommodation is more than a single strategy sat within the remit of an already busy individual. It is a role in of itself. It isn't a student experience or residence life manager, an individual with general responsibilities for student wellbeing, running events or something that is tucked away under DEIB in HR. If we truly wish to embed the recommendations of reports like this and those from the Living Black research, it's time that we created leadership positions which command the same authority and respect as those appointed into commercial, financial, IT and estates director roles. Perhaps then we'll start to see some real progress? #StudentAccommodation #PBSA #StudentExperience #DiversityAndInclusion #DEIB https://lnkd.in/eqKazYPh

What do you do when your team tells you 'no'? Do you seek to discuss the issue, convey the various viewpoints, perhaps grow firmer and firmer in insisting something get done? All valid approaches. Except in my case? I had no choice but to support the team and their feedback. And in this case, after telling me 'no', they couldn't have done a better job. So. Let me give some context. We're at that time of year where it's almost obligatory to do a post about the excitment and the highlights of another o-week. Except this time, things were a little different. Less than a week out from orientation, our main lecture theatre, which forms a core pillar of our orientation programming, went out of action. When discussing the situation and the resulting options for our orientation program with the team, I talked about managing stakeholder expectations, bringing the program back to core deliverables and removing nice-to-haves, and supporting them in the work it would take in replanning by taking work off their plate. Their response? In the nicest possible way, no. The counterproposal was essentially what if, instead of what you've suggested Ewan, we just deliver the same kick-ass program to set our students up for success? No concesssions? And so they did. It took a combined effort across our Student Belonging and Communications, Employability, and Academic Programs team, but together, they reviewed the acceptances, replanned the program across three days of UG, PG, and HDR in new venues, and ensured we had a kick-ass program of skills development, connection building, self-reflection, and, of course, merchandise incentives to set our incoming cohort up for success. So thank you to the team for telling me 'no'. And thank you to everyone across the three teams who ensured that we delivered. Thank you to everyone across the teams for contributing to the success, but a particular thank you to Jenny Williams Scott Murray Amanda Sawyer Ana Lazaro Uliana Buldakova Louise Dorinko Laura Fernandez Shal Segar Clare Wheelahan, to your teams Shane Morley Lisa Williams Jenny Williams, and to the merchandise magicians Vanessa Abbey and Sarah Wolfe. I won't tell you who instigated the 'no' 🤣
